What does ASAP mean? Definition, origin and use at work

ASAP is an abbreviation of “as soon as possible” that signals a task should be done with top priority, without a fixed deadline. It has military roots: The Phrase Finder traces the earliest printed use to a 1954 account of Korean War airlift operations. Today ASAP is one of the most common abbreviations in business email, chat and project tools.

What does ASAP mean?

ASAP means “as soon as possible”, a request to treat a task as urgent and finish it before other work. It sets priority, not a date. Merriam-Webster lists two accepted pronunciations: spelling out the letters (A-S-A-P) or saying it as one word (“AY-sap”). Both uppercase ASAP and lowercase asap appear in writing.

Where does ASAP come from?

ASAP comes from US military language of the 1950s. The Phrase Finder cites Captain Annis G. Thompson’s book “The Greatest Airlift” (1954), which describes supply drops in Korea made on an ASAP basis. Babbel dates its spread as US Army slang to 1955. From the military the abbreviation moved into office memos, then into email and finally into Slack and Teams messages.

How is ASAP used in business?

ASAP appears in three common situations, each with a different level of real urgency.

Internal requests

A manager asks for a report “ASAP” to signal that it outranks the rest of the to-do list.

Client communication

Clients write “please fix ASAP” when something blocks sales, for example a broken checkout or a campaign with a wrong price.

Project tools

Teams in Asana, Trello or ClickUp use ASAP as a priority label, often next to “high” or “urgent”.

ASAP vs a specific deadline

A specific deadline works better than ASAP whenever several people or tasks compete for the same time, because “as soon as possible” means something different to each person. One reads it as “within an hour”, another as “this week”.

ASAP in marketing and SEO work

In marketing projects ASAP is justified for issues that stop revenue or visibility right now. In my SEO work these are the real ASAP cases:

  • Site-wide noindex or a robots.txt block after a deployment.
  • A wrong temporary 302 redirect on key pages after a migration.
  • A sudden traffic drop after an attack such as negative SEO or a hacked site.
  • Broken tracking that hides conversions during an active paid campaign.

Everything else, from content updates to link building, belongs in a planned SEO strategy with dates and owners. Teams that label every task ASAP lose the ability to spot the real emergencies, and, true to Murphy’s law, those arrive at the worst moment. A clear KPI for response time works better than an inbox full of urgent flags.

Pro tip: Replace “ASAP” with “by Thursday 12:00, because the campaign starts on Friday”. A date plus a reason gets faster action than urgency alone, and it saves a round of follow-up questions.

Similar business abbreviations

ASAP often appears next to other English abbreviations used in offices worldwide.

  • EOD: end of day, the deadline is the close of business today.
  • FYI: for your information, no action needed.
  • ETA: estimated time of arrival or completion.
  • TBD: to be determined, the detail is not decided yet.
