How does a ccTLD work?
A ccTLD works as the last label of a domain name that maps a site to one country. IANA delegates each code to a national registry, which sets its own rules for who can register a name: DENIC runs .de, CZ.NIC runs .cz and NASK runs .pl. Some registries only accept local residents or companies, so check the requirements before you plan a market launch. A ccTLD is one branch of the wider family of top-level domains, next to generic extensions such as .com or .org.
Key facts about ccTLDs
The table shows the scale of the ccTLD market in 2026, based on registry and Verisign data.
| Fact | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ccTLD registrations worldwide | 148.6 million (Q2 2026) | Verisign DNIB |
| Share of all domains | about 37% of 401.6 million | Verisign DNIB |
| Largest ccTLDs | .cn, .de, .uk, .ru, .nl | Verisign DNIB |
| Active .pl domains | 2,559,869 (end of 2025) | NASK annual report |
How does Google treat ccTLDs?
Google treats a ccTLD as a strong, built-in signal of country targeting, so example.de ranks primarily for users in Germany. Google Search Central lists the main advantages: clear geotargeting, independence from server location and easy separation of sites. The drawbacks are cost, limited availability, more infrastructure and the fact that each domain targets only one country.
Generic ccTLDs
Google handles some two-letter extensions as generic domains, because users see them as brand names, not countries. The current list includes .co, .tv, .me, .io, .fm, .ai and .ws. A .io site therefore gets no automatic link to the British Indian Ocean Territory and needs hreflang or other signals to target a market.
No manual country setting
Google Search Console removed the International Targeting report in September 2022, after announcing the change on 24 August 2022. Owners of .com sites can no longer pick a target country in the tool, which makes the ccTLD the only URL-level geotargeting signal Google still reads automatically.
ccTLD vs subdirectory vs subdomain
A ccTLD is the most explicit of the 3 URL structures Google describes for international sites, and also the most expensive to run.
| Structure | Example | Geotargeting | Authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| ccTLD | example.de | Clear from the URL | Built per domain |
| Subdirectory | example.com/de/ | Needs hreflang | Shared with the root |
| Subdomain | de.example.com | Unclear (language or country?) | Partly shared |
ccTLDs in international SEO
A ccTLD fits brands that need local trust and run separate teams, prices and legal entities per country. In my expansions into Germany and the Czech Republic, local buyers clicked a .de or .cz result more readily than a .com subfolder, and local link building was easier because publishers prefer linking to a national domain. The cost is real: every ccTLD starts with zero authority, needs its own links, its own Search Console property and its own content plan.
A ccTLD does not replace hreflang. Use hreflang between example.pl, example.de and example.cz whenever the domains share the same language or similar content, for example de-DE and de-AT. Keep each domain in its own language and avoid automatic IP redirects, because Google crawls mostly from US addresses.
- Choose a ccTLD for 1 to 3 priority markets with local teams and budgets.
- Choose a subdirectory for fast expansion into many markets on one domain.
- Register the ccTLD anyway to protect the brand, even if it only redirects.
Unsure whether a ccTLD or a subfolder suits your expansion? My international SEO consultancy starts with exactly this decision, and the guide to SEO in Germany shows how it plays out on the German market.
Frequently asked questions about Country code top-level domain
What is an example of a ccTLD?
Examples of ccTLDs are .pl for Poland, .de for Germany, .cz for the Czech Republic and .uk for the United Kingdom. Each one is a two-letter code based on the ISO 3166-1 country list.
Is a ccTLD better for SEO than .com?
A ccTLD is better for ranking in one specific country because Google reads it as a strong geotargeting signal. A .com with subdirectories is better for reaching many markets, because all language versions share one domain's authority.
Does Google treat .io and .ai as country domains?
No. Google treats .io, .ai, .co, .tv, .me, .fm and .ws as generic domains, so they carry no country signal. Use hreflang to target markets from these domains.
Can I set a target country for a .com in Search Console?
No. Google removed the International Targeting report and its country setting from Search Console in September 2022. Use hreflang, local content and local signals instead.
