The future of AI search for businesses is hybrid: AI answers are becoming the first stop for research, while Google Search keeps growing and still sends most of the visits that turn into revenue. The verified data shows huge adoption, fewer clicks per search on questions that get AI summaries, and slower progress than predicted on AI agents that buy on a customer’s behalf.
For a business, that means two jobs at once. Keep the search traffic you have, and make sure that when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode or Perplexity about your category, your brand is named, described correctly and linked. Companies that measure only rankings and sessions will miss the part of the buying journey that now happens inside an AI answer.
This guide separates what is measured from what is forecast. First the facts with sources and dates, then the main forecasts and how they are holding up, then our view of the next few years, labeled as opinion, and finally a concrete action list.
What do we know for sure about AI search today?
These figures come from the platforms themselves or from independent research. They describe the present, not a prediction.
| Figure | Source | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 900 million weekly ChatGPT users and 50 million paying subscribers, up from 800 million weekly users in October 2025 | OpenAI, reported by TechCrunch | 27 February 2026 |
| Google AI Mode passed one billion monthly users; AI Mode queries are about three times longer than traditional searches | Google at I/O 2026, reported by Talk Android | 20 May 2026 |
| Google AI Overviews reached more than 2 billion monthly users | Alphabet Q2 2025 earnings call, reported by Digiday and others | July 2025 |
| 44% of US adults say they use ChatGPT, up from 34% in 2025; 61% of adults aged 18 to 29 | Pew Research Center, survey of 17 to 23 February 2026 | Published June 2026 |
| Google Search queries at an all-time high; Search and other revenue up 19% year over year | Alphabet Q1 2026 earnings, reported by Search Engine Journal | April 2026 |
| About 70% of ChatGPT consumer usage is not work related; practical guidance, seeking information and writing make up about three quarters of conversations | OpenAI usage study of 1.5 million conversations | 15 September 2025 |
Two things stand out. AI assistants are now mainstream consumer tools, not an early-adopter niche. And Google is not shrinking: it is absorbing AI answers into Search itself, which is why “AI search” for most businesses still starts with Google.
How has AI search already changed clicks and traffic?
The clearest measured effect is fewer clicks per search when an AI summary appears.
- Pew Research Center (22 July 2025) tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. AI summaries appeared on 18% of Google searches. When a summary appeared, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary. Sessions also ended more often after a page with a summary: 26% versus 16%.
- Bain and Company (19 February 2025), based on a December 2024 survey of 1,117 consumers, found that about 80% of consumers rely on zero-click results in at least 40% of their searches, and that about 60% of searches end without a visit to another site.
- McKinsey (October 2025), from a survey of 1,927 US consumers fielded in August 2025, found that about half of consumers now intentionally use AI-powered search, and that a brand’s own websites make up only about 5% to 10% of the sources AI search references.
The last point matters most for planning. If AI answers are built mainly from third-party sources such as reviews, marketplaces, forums, media and directories, then your visibility depends on what those sources say about you, not only on your own site.
What do the big forecasts say, and are they on track?
Forecasts are useful for direction, not for budgets. Here are the most quoted ones, kept separate from the measured facts above.
| Forecast | Who and when | Target year | Status as of November 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional search engine volume will drop 25% because of AI chatbots and virtual agents | Gartner, 19 February 2024 | 2026 | Not visible in Google’s own reporting: Alphabet said queries hit an all-time high in Q1 2026, although that count includes AI Mode and AI Overviews |
| $750 billion of US revenue will flow through AI-powered search | McKinsey, October 2025 | 2028 | Too early to judge; no public tracking of this figure yet |
| Brands unprepared for AI search may lose 20% to 50% of traffic from traditional search | McKinsey, October 2025 | Not dated | A range of risk, not a measured outcome |
| AI summaries could reduce organic web traffic by 15% to 25% | Bain, 19 February 2025 | Not dated | Consistent in direction with the Pew click data |
| Agentic shoppers could drive $190 billion to $385 billion of US ecommerce spending, around 10% of online retail and up to 20% in an optimistic case | Morgan Stanley Research, 8 December 2025 | 2030 | Early: the first in-chat checkout products are still being reshaped (see below) |
The pattern so far: forecasts about clicks moving away from websites look directionally right, while forecasts about search volume collapsing have not shown up in Google’s numbers. Most businesses should plan for fewer clicks per question, not for the end of search.
Will AI agents start buying on behalf of customers?
The infrastructure is being built, but adoption is slower than the announcements suggested. The timeline so far:
- 29 September 2025: OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT for US users, starting with Etsy sellers and with Shopify merchants announced, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol developed with Stripe.
- 11 January 2026: Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol at the NRF retail conference, designed to let AI agents handle discovery, checkout and post-purchase steps, with plans to support eligible listings in AI Mode and the Gemini apps.
- 24 March 2026: OpenAI said it would let merchants use their own checkout experiences and shifted its focus to product discovery, after reported problems with retailer onboarding, multi-item carts and loyalty programs, as covered by AI Business (25 March 2026).
Morgan Stanley’s AlphaWise survey, published with its December 2025 forecast, found that about half of US LLM users had researched and compared product prices in an assistant in the past month. That supports a clear near-term reading: AI is already shaping what people buy, even when the purchase still happens on the retailer’s site. For a deeper look at how this works today, read our guide to how AI shopping works.
What is the most likely outlook through 2030?
The following is our view, based on the data above. It is an informed opinion, not a measured fact.
2026 to 2027: the hybrid journey becomes normal
Buyers use an assistant to understand a problem and build a shortlist, then use Google, marketplaces and brand sites to check prices, reviews and availability. Google keeps most commercial traffic but delivers more of it through AI Overviews and AI Mode. Fewer clicks reach websites for simple informational questions, while visits that do arrive tend to come later in the journey.
2028 to 2030: comparison and selection move further into AI answers
More of the comparison stage happens inside AI answers, and agent-assisted purchases grow in categories with simple, repeatable orders. How fast this happens depends on trust, payments and how well merchants expose product data to agents. The forecasts range widely, so treat any single number with care.
Three scenarios to plan for
- Steady hybrid (our base case): Google stays dominant, AI answers take a growing share of research, clicks per query keep falling slowly.
- Faster shift: assistants become the default starting point for most product and service research, and agent checkout becomes common in retail.
- Slower shift: trust problems, regulation or poor answer quality keep AI as a research aid, with little change to how people buy.
The good news is that the same actions pay off in all three scenarios.
How does AI search affect different types of business?
- Local service businesses: AI answers for “near me” and city questions lean on Google Business Profile, reviews and directories. Consistent name, address and phone data matters more, not less. See our local SEO page.
- Ecommerce: product data quality, structured data, reviews and marketplace listings decide whether assistants can recommend your products. Our ecommerce SEO guide covers the foundations.
- B2B and SaaS: long research cycles mean buyers ask assistants for shortlists and comparisons. Clear positioning, honest comparison pages and third-party reviews carry weight. See our B2B SEO service.
- Publishers and content-led businesses: the most exposed group, because simple informational questions are where AI answers replace clicks. Original data and expertise become the main reasons to visit.
What should a business do now?
Start with measurement, then fix the foundations, then build the content and third-party presence engines rely on.
- Write down your 30 to 50 most valuable buyer questions. Use sales calls, support tickets and long queries from Google Search Console.
- Test them every month in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Record whether you are mentioned, cited, recommended or missing.
- Separate exposure from outcomes. Mentions and citations show visibility. AI referral sessions, leads and sales show business value. Report both.
- Track AI referrals in GA4. Create a channel for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ confirms ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links.
- Check crawler access. Make sure robots.txt does not block Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot on pages you want cited.
- Keep normal SEO strong. Google states that pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements.
- Rewrite key pages answer first. Start each page with the direct answer, then the details, tables and FAQs that cover follow-up questions.
- Fix your entity data. Company name, products, locations and key people should be consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
- Invest in third-party proof. Reviews, industry media, partner pages and community answers are a large share of what AI answers cite.
- Get product and service data ready for agents. Accurate feeds, prices, availability and policies are the minimum entry ticket for AI shopping features.
Our guide to what a GEO agency does explains how these tasks are usually split between an in-house team and a partner.
Which signals should change your investment?
- AI referral sessions growing as a share of all organic and referral traffic in your own GA4 data.
- Leads or orders that name ChatGPT or another assistant in “how did you hear about us” answers.
- Competitors appearing in AI answers for your core buyer questions when you do not.
- Falling click-through rates in Search Console on queries where impressions are stable.
- New official reporting, such as AI citation reports from search engines, becoming available for your market.
When two or more of these move, shift budget from volume content toward answer-first pages, entity work and third-party presence.

Frequently asked questions about the future of AI search
Will AI search replace Google?
Not on current evidence. ChatGPT has grown to 900 million weekly users (February 2026), but Alphabet reported Google Search queries at an all-time high in Q1 2026. The more likely future is a mix, with Google itself delivering more AI answers.
Did Gartner’s prediction of a 25% search drop by 2026 come true?
Google’s own reporting does not show it. Alphabet said queries reached an all-time high in early 2026, although that total includes AI Mode and AI Overviews. What has fallen is the share of searches that end in a click when an AI summary appears.
Is a citation in an AI answer the same as a recommendation?
No. A citation means your page was used as a source. A recommendation means the answer names your brand as a choice. Track mentions, citations, recommendations and visits separately.
Should small businesses worry about AI search?
They should pay attention, not panic. Accurate Google Business Profile data, steady reviews and clear service pages already cover most of what AI answers use for local questions.
When will AI agents buy products for customers at scale?
Nobody knows yet. Morgan Stanley forecasts agentic shoppers could account for around 10% of US online retail by 2030, but OpenAI scaled back its in-chat checkout in March 2026 to focus on discovery.
What should businesses remember about the future of AI search?
Adoption of AI search is a fact. The size and timing of its impact on your revenue is still a forecast. Measure where you stand today, keep search fundamentals strong, and build the content and third-party proof that AI answers depend on. Those steps pay off whether the shift is fast or slow.
