What is transcreation? Definition, examples and SEO use

Transcreation is the adaptation of a marketing message for another market by recreating its intent, tone and emotion in the target language instead of translating the words. The term blends “translation” and “creation”, and it sits above translation and localization as the most creative level of language work. According to a 2020 CSA Research survey of 8,709 consumers in 29 countries, 76% of online shoppers prefer products with information in their native language.

What does transcreation mean?

Transcreation means writing new copy for a target market that achieves the same effect as the original, even if the words change completely. The source text works as a brief, not as a script. Arle Lommel of CSA Research (formerly Common Sense Advisory) describes it as creating target-language content inspired by the source, as quoted by CMSWire. Transcreators are usually native copywriters, not only translators.

Transcreation vs translation vs localization

Transcreation differs from translation and localization in how far the text may move away from the source. CMSWire describes the 3 as consecutive levels:

LevelWhat changesTypical contentPricing
TranslationWords, meaning stays 1:1Manuals, legal text, specsPer word
LocalizationUnits, currency, dates, images, referencesProduct pages, apps, help centresPer word
TranscreationConcept, wording, sometimes visualsSlogans, ads, campaigns, landing pagesPer hour or per project

Smartling notes that transcreation is billed like copywriting, by the hour or project, because the work is creative rather than linguistic.

Examples of transcreation

The best examples of transcreation are slogans that keep the feeling and rhythm while the literal meaning changes. The 3 cases below come from Smartling and Supertext.

Haribo

The German slogan “HARIBO macht Kinder froh und Erwachsene ebenso” became “Kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of HARIBO” in English. The rhyme and the promise stay, the sentence structure does not.

McDonald’s

“I’m lovin’ it” became “Me encanta” in Spanish, which is closer to “I really like it”, because the Spanish verb for love carries romantic weight. The Chinese version also avoids the word for love, which is rarely said aloud in China.

Coca-Cola and Mercedes-Benz in China

Both brands replaced phonetic renderings that produced unfortunate meanings with names chosen for sound and sense. Coca-Cola uses Kekou Kele (roughly “tasty happiness”) and Mercedes-Benz uses Ben Chi (“dashing speed”).

Transcreation in international SEO

Transcreation matters in SEO because a transcreated page must also match how people in the target market actually search. A literal translation of an English keyword often has no search volume in German or Czech, so I run separate keyword research per market and give the transcreator the local keywords and search intent in the brief. The same applies to title tags and meta descriptions: a creative headline that ignores the local query loses clicks.

Google evaluates translated content by its value, not by how it was produced. In June 2025 Google removed its old advice to block automatically translated pages with robots.txt, pointing site owners to its scaled content abuse policy instead. Thin machine translations at scale remain a risk, while transcreated pages give each market unique, useful content. Each version still needs correct hreflang so Google shows the right one, as part of a full multilingual SEO setup.

Transcreation and AI search

AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answer in the user’s language and quote sources written for that market. Native, transcreated copy with local examples and data has a better chance of being cited than a stiff translation, which is a core part of how I approach AI SEO (GEO).

When to use transcreation

Use transcreation for content whose job is to persuade or create emotion, and translation for content whose job is to inform:

  • Slogans, taglines and brand names.
  • Ad copy for Google Ads and Meta Ads.
  • Homepages, landing pages and email campaigns.
  • Category descriptions in e-commerce where tone sells.

A good transcreation brief names the target audience, tone of voice, campaign goal, desired action and the local keywords.

Pro tip: Transcreate the 10 to 20 pages that drive revenue (homepage, top categories, main landing pages) and localize the long tail. On a German expansion this split gave me native-quality money pages at a fraction of the cost of transcreating every product page.

Frequently asked questions about Transcreation

What is the difference between translation and transcreation?

Translation keeps the meaning of the source text as close as possible. Transcreation keeps the intent and emotional effect, and may change the wording, examples and even visuals to reach that effect in another culture.

Is transcreation more expensive than translation?

Yes, in most cases, because it is priced like copywriting, by the hour or by project, rather than per word. Companies usually transcreate only slogans, ads and key landing pages.

Is transcreation good for SEO?

Transcreation helps SEO when the brief includes local keywords and search intent for each market. It produces unique, useful pages per language, which suits Google's quality guidelines better than mass machine translation.

Who does transcreation?

Transcreation is done by native-speaking copywriters or specialised linguists who know the target culture. They work from a creative brief rather than from the source text alone.
