What is Yahoo? Definition, history and search share

Yahoo is an American web portal and search engine founded in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo, today owned by Apollo Global Management (90%) and Verizon (10%). According to Statcounter, Yahoo held 1.36% of the worldwide search market in September 2026, which made it the third largest search engine after Google and Bing. Its search results come from Microsoft Bing, and since January 2026 it also runs its own AI answer engine, Yahoo Scout.

How does Yahoo work today?

Yahoo works as a content portal with a search box, built on Microsoft’s search index. Users come for Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo News and Yahoo Sports, and search from the same pages. Since a 10-year agreement announced on 29 July 2009, Bing has supplied Yahoo’s organic and paid search results, while Yahoo controls how the results page looks. Under the original terms, Microsoft paid Yahoo 88% of search revenue from Yahoo sites for the first five years.

The main Yahoo products are:

  • Yahoo Search and the Yahoo Scout AI answer engine.
  • Yahoo Mail, one of the oldest free email services.
  • Yahoo Finance, a widely used source of market data.
  • Yahoo News and Yahoo Sports, content hubs with large audiences.

History of Yahoo: key dates

Yahoo started as a hand-made directory of websites called “Jerry and David’s guide to the World Wide Web”, created by two Stanford graduate students.

Yahoo search market share

Yahoo is a small but still relevant search engine, strongest in the United States. Statcounter’s September 2026 data shows the worldwide picture:

Search engineWorldwide share (Sep 2026)Poland (Sep 2026)
Google89.94%89.56%
Bing5.29%7.38%
Yahoo!1.36%0.51%

DuckDuckGo0.74%0.79%

When Apollo took over in 2021, it described Yahoo as having about 900 million monthly users worldwide. In January 2026 Yahoo reported 250 million monthly users in the US alone.

Yahoo Scout: Yahoo’s AI search

Yahoo Scout is an AI answer engine that writes answers with sources instead of showing ten blue links. It launched in beta on 27 January 2026, runs mainly on Anthropic’s Claude models and uses Microsoft Bing’s grounding API to pull sources from the open web. CEO Jim Lanzone presented it as a return to Yahoo’s search roots, and in June 2026 Yahoo added Scout tools for sports and finance.

Yahoo in SEO and marketing

Yahoo matters for SEO because ranking in Bing also gets you into Yahoo, and now into Yahoo Scout answers. There is no separate Yahoo index to optimise for: verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, keep the sitemap clean and make sure Bingbot can crawl key pages. Search ads on Yahoo are bought through Microsoft Advertising, so a CPC campaign there reaches Bing, Yahoo and partner sites together.

For international projects, Yahoo traffic is worth checking in the US, where Yahoo reports 250 million monthly users. In my international SEO audits I look at Bing data per country before deciding whether Yahoo deserves extra attention. The same structured, citable content that helps with Generative Engine Optimization also improves your chance of being quoted by Scout.

Pro tip: Treat Bing Webmaster Tools as your Yahoo console. Submit your sitemap there, use IndexNow for new URLs and watch the AI Performance report, because Copilot and Yahoo Scout both pull web sources from Bing.
