SEO optimizes a page to rank in search results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes a brand and its content to be retrieved, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. They are not rivals. GEO is built on top of SEO, and in 2026 most companies need both, in different proportions.
This guide explains what each discipline optimizes for, where they overlap and where they split, what the traffic data actually shows, how to measure each one and how to divide budget and work between them. If you are choosing between agencies rather than disciplines, read our companion piece GEO agency vs SEO agency: do you need both?
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes for a place inside an answer. The unit of competition changes from a page to a passage, and the audience that has to be convinced changes from a ranking algorithm to a retrieval system plus a language model that writes the answer.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be cited and recommended in AI answers |
| Unit of competition | The page | The passage and the brand entity |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health, intent match | Same, plus entity consistency, third-party mentions, extractable formats, freshness |
| Off-site focus | Backlinks | Mentions in context, reviews, directories, forums, press |
| Engines | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot |
| Success metrics | Rankings, clicks, organic sessions, conversions | Mentions, citations, share of voice, AI referral sessions, branded search lift |
| Measurement tools | Search Console, GA4, rank trackers | Prompt tracking, AI visibility tools, GA4 AI referral channel |
| Volatility | Rankings move over weeks | Answers change from one run to the next |
How do AI engines choose sources, and where does SEO fit in?
Most AI engines retrieve first and write second, so classic SEO decides whether you are in the candidate set and GEO decides whether you are quoted. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI features break a prompt into several sub-queries (Google calls this query fan-out), fetch pages for each, extract the most useful passages and then compose an answer that cites a few of them.
That gives a two-step model:
- Retrieval (SEO territory). Your page has to be crawlable, indexed and relevant for the sub-queries. If it does not rank, or the AI crawler cannot read it, it is never considered.
- Selection and synthesis (GEO territory). Among the retrieved passages, the model prefers clear definitions, specific numbers, lists and tables, and sources that agree with what the rest of the web says about you.
The engines do not retrieve from the same web. Semrush’s September 2026 study of manufacturing search found an engineering reference site that dominated ChatGPT citations while missing the top-cited list on Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews, because most of its traffic came from Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo rather than Google. Research summarized by PPC Land puts citation overlap between major AI platforms at around 11%. Being strong in Google does not guarantee visibility in ChatGPT, and the reverse is also true.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Search engines still send far more traffic than AI assistants, and AI assistants depend on search indexes to answer. Datos data reported by PPC Land put AI tools below 2% of desktop visits in the first quarter of 2026, while Google held 94% of search. Conductor measured AI referrals at 1.08% of website traffic across ten industries, with Information Technology highest at 2.80%. In manufacturing, Semrush measured AI channels at 0.48% of sessions between January and July 2026.
What is changing is the click. Ahrefs measured a 58% reduction in click-through rate for top-ranking pages when an AI Overview appears, and a randomized field experiment with 1,065 Chrome users found a 39.8% drop in outbound organic clicks. Google is answering more queries itself, and the answer is a GEO surface.
So SEO is not being replaced, but its scoreboard is shrinking on the queries where AI answers appear, and a growing share of influence happens before the click. Similarweb found that 55.9% of AI-influenced visits arrived through a later branded search rather than a click inside the conversation. A company that only measures organic clicks will undercount what its visibility is worth, and a company that ignores GEO will lose the shortlist without seeing it in analytics.
Where do GEO and SEO overlap?
Most of the foundation is shared, which is why the same team can usually run both. Every item below helps rankings and AI citations at the same time:
- Crawlability and rendering. Server-rendered HTML, fast pages, clean canonicals and no accidental blocks. Many AI crawlers read HTML only, so content that appears only after JavaScript runs is a risk for both.
- Clear structure. Descriptive headings, an answer in the first sentence, lists and tables. Google uses the same signals for featured snippets that AI engines use for extraction.
- Entities and structured data. Organization, Product, Person, Article and FAQ markup, consistent names and facts, and links to your profiles elsewhere.
- Topical depth. Covering a subject completely, not one keyword at a time.
- Freshness. Real updates with visible dates on commercial pages, comparisons and statistics.
- Authority. Being referenced by trusted sites, whether through a link or a mention.
Our Planika project shows the overlap in practice. A Polish fireplace manufacturer entered the US with a site Google had not indexed. Seven US-localized articles, built on technical fixes and semantic SEO, reached 1,052 monthly organic visits and 286 keywords in the Top 3, and the same pages earned 401 Google AI Overview mentions, 173 in AI Mode, 136 in Perplexity and 70 in Gemini. No separate GEO content was written. Read the case study.
Where do GEO and SEO split?
GEO adds four kinds of work that classic SEO usually skips.
| GEO work | Why it matters | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt research | People ask AI full questions with context, not two-word keywords | “Which landing page builder is best for agencies with 20 clients?” |
| Third-party consensus | Models trust what others say about you more than what you say | Consistent descriptions on G2, Reddit, directories, Wikidata and press |
| Mentions vs citations | The brands named and the pages linked are often different | In Semrush’s manufacturing data only 2 of the top 15 mentioned and top 15 cited domains overlapped |
| AI-specific technical access | Separate crawlers and files | Allowing GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot; llms.txt; Bing indexing for ChatGPT |
There is also a difference in mindset. SEO can win with one strong page for a keyword. GEO rewards being the most quotable, most consistent source across many related questions, on your site and off it.
How do you measure GEO compared with SEO?
SEO has stable rankings and clicks. GEO has probabilistic answers, so it has to be measured across many prompts and over time. SparkToro’s research found there is less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google’s AI returns the same list of brands in two responses to the same request. One screenshot proves nothing.
| Question | SEO metric | GEO metric |
|---|---|---|
| Are we visible? | Rankings and impressions | Share of tracked prompts where the brand is mentioned |
| Are we the source? | Featured snippets | Share of prompts where our URL is cited |
| Against whom? | Competitor rankings | Share of voice versus named competitors per engine |
| Are we described correctly? | Title and snippet | Accuracy and sentiment of how AI describes us |
| Does it bring business? | Organic sessions and conversions | AI referral sessions in GA4, branded search and direct traffic lift, influenced leads |
In GA4, create a channel for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. For Landingi, that line reached roughly 5,000 sessions a month. Track a fixed set of 50 to 200 buyer prompts weekly across engines, and report trends, not single answers.
How should you split budget between GEO and SEO?
Start from SEO, then shift budget to GEO as AI answers take over more of your category’s questions. There is no universal ratio, and published splits are opinions rather than measurements. This is how we decide:
| Situation | Weighting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Site has indexing or technical problems | Almost all SEO | Nothing gets cited until it can be retrieved |
| Local business, mostly map pack demand | Mostly local SEO, light GEO | Google Business Profile and reviews drive both |
| Ecommerce with strong product search | Mostly SEO, GEO for comparisons and “best” queries | Transactional clicks still come from search |
| B2B and SaaS with long research cycles | Roughly even | Buyers build shortlists in AI tools |
| Category where AI Overviews cover most queries | GEO-heavy content, SEO maintained | The answer box is the battleground |
| Selling in several languages | GEO per market | Engines cite different sources in each language |
The B2B case for GEO is strongest because that is where AI shapes the shortlist. Forrester’s 2026 Buyers’ Journey research found that 94% of business buyers used AI in their most recent purchase, and G2 found in March 2026 that 51% of software buyers now start research in an AI chat more often than in Google, up from 29% a year earlier.
What makes content work for both GEO and SEO?
Write each section so that its first sentence could be quoted on its own, then prove it. That single habit serves featured snippets, AI Overviews and chat answers.
- Answer first. Open with a direct, complete sentence that defines or decides.
- Be specific. Numbers, dates, named sources, units and conditions.
- Use structure models can lift. Lists with one idea per item, comparison tables with consistent columns, FAQ blocks that mirror real questions.
- Name the expert. Real authors with credentials, especially in health, finance, legal and technical topics.
- Include what the answer cannot absorb. A tool, a calculator, original data, a configurator or a next step. Semrush found that pages fully summarized by AI earned citations but few clicks, while catalogues, research and places to act earned the visits.
- Update for real. Refresh figures and examples, not just the date.
Who should run GEO in a company?
The SEO lead should own GEO, with PR, product marketing and content as contributors. Technical access, structured data and content are already SEO work. What GEO adds, third-party mentions, reviews and consistent brand facts, sits with PR and product marketing, so the owner needs a mandate across those teams. One owner, one prompt set, one shared dashboard works better than separate SEO and “AI” projects competing for the same pages.
Frequently asked questions about GEO vs SEO
What is the main difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank pages in search results. GEO aims to have your brand and content retrieved, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers. GEO builds on SEO and adds prompt research, third-party consensus and AI-specific measurement.
Can GEO replace SEO?
No. AI engines retrieve from search indexes, and search still sends far more traffic than AI tools. Without SEO, there is little for AI engines to retrieve and cite.
Is GEO the same as AEO or LLMO?
They describe largely the same work. AEO stresses direct answers, LLMO stresses large language models and GEO stresses generative answers. What matters is what is measured.
How long does GEO take compared with SEO?
Technical, entity and structured data fixes can change how AI engines describe a brand within weeks. New citations for long-tail prompts usually appear within one to three months, and becoming a default recommendation in a competitive category typically takes six to twelve months. These are typical ranges, not guarantees.
Do I need a separate GEO agency?
Not if your SEO partner already tracks prompts, works on entities and mentions, and reports AI referrals separately. If it does not, see GEO agency vs SEO agency.
What should you remember about GEO vs SEO?
SEO gets you retrieved. GEO gets you quoted and recommended. The foundation is shared, the scoreboards differ and both are needed wherever buyers ask AI before they search.
