What is Naver? Definition, history and how it works

Naver is South Korea’s largest search engine and web portal, run by Naver Corporation, which Lee Hae-jin founded in June 1999. According to research firm Internet Trend, Naver handled 62.86% of Korean search traffic in 2025, up from 58.14% in 2024. For any brand entering Korea, Naver is not optional: it combines search, blogs, Q&A, shopping and maps in one closed ecosystem.

How does Naver work?

Naver works as a portal that mixes web results with its own content services on one results page. A Korean query typically returns blocks from Naver Blog, Naver Cafe (community forums), Knowledge iN (Q&A), Naver Shopping, maps and news, with classic website links only one section among many. Interad notes that only about 4 organic spots for websites are typically available, so Naver’s own properties take most of the visibility.

History of Naver: key dates

Naver grew from a 1999 start-up into a Korean tech group with search, messaging and AI.

Naver market share in South Korea

Naver’s market share depends on the measurement method, but every source places it as Korea’s first or second search engine. Internet Trend, a Korean panel, reports 62.86% for 2025 after 58.14% in 2024. Statcounter, which counts page views on sites using its tracker, shows Google at 47.97% and Naver at 43.06% in September 2026. In my projects I treat Naver and Google as equal channels in Korea, because together they cover more than 90% of searches in Statcounter’s data.

Naver SEO: how to rank on Naver

Naver SEO combines a technically clean website with presence on Naver’s own platforms. The H3s below cover the main levers.

Naver Search Advisor

Naver Search Advisor is Naver’s free webmaster tool, the local equivalent of Google Search Console. You verify the site with an HTML file or meta tag, request crawling of new pages and monitor reports on impressions, clicks and site diagnosis. Naver’s crawler is called Yeti, so check that robots.txt does not block it.

Naver Blog and Cafe

Naver Blog posts and Cafe threads rank prominently in Naver results, so brands publish Korean-language content there and link it to their site. Interad points out that links from Naver properties support a site’s credibility in Naver.

On-page basics

Naver displays titles of about 40 characters and descriptions of about 80, shorter than Google. Write them in natural Korean, built on Korean keyword research, not on translated English phrases.

Naver ads

Naver sells search, shopping and display ads through its own ad platform, separate from Google Ads:

  • Power Link: text ads at the top of results, billed per click from 70 KRW.
  • Brand Search: branded banners for brand-name queries, sold at fixed monthly prices from 500,000 KRW.
  • Shopping Search: product ads, best suited to sellers with a Naver Smart Store.
  • Power Content: promoted blog posts for selected keywords.
  • Display ads: guaranteed placements and the performance network GFA.

Naver belongs to a small group of local champions, together with Baidu in China, Yandex in Russia and Seznam in Czechia, that show why one global search engine strategy rarely fits every market.

Pro tip: Before investing in Naver, search your main Korean keywords on both Naver and Google and count which blocks appear above the first website link. If blogs and Cafe threads dominate, budget for Korean creators and Naver Blog content, not only for your own pages.

I plan entries into markets like Korea as part of international SEO, and AI Briefing visibility as part of AI SEO.
