How does a featured snippet work?
A featured snippet works by reversing the usual result format: Google shows the answer text first and the source page second. Google’s systems decide automatically whether a page makes a good snippet for a query; site owners cannot mark a page as one, and there is no minimum text length. Clicking the snippet scrolls the user straight to the quoted section of the page. Featured snippets also appear inside the “People Also Ask” boxes on the SERP.
Featured snippet key facts
Featured snippets are a Google feature since January 2014, deduplicated from organic results since 22 January 2020. Since that change, announced by Google’s Danny Sullivan, the featured page no longer appears a second time in the top 10 on page 1, because the snippet counts as one of the ten listings.
| Fact | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | January 2014 | Google, The Keyword |
| Deduplication | 22 January 2020 | Danny Sullivan, Google |
| Queries with a snippet | about 12.29% | Ahrefs, 2017 |
| Snippets from top-10 pages | 99.58% | Ahrefs, 2017 |
| Snippets taken from position 1 | 30.9% | Ahrefs, 2017 |
Types of featured snippets
Featured snippets come in 3 main formats: paragraph, list and table. The format follows the search intent behind the query.
Paragraph snippet
A paragraph snippet answers “what is” and “why” questions with a short definition, usually two or three sentences taken from one block of text.
List snippet
A list snippet shows numbered steps or bullet points for “how to” and “best” queries, often built from the page’s H2 or H3 headings.
Table snippet
A table snippet pulls rows from an HTML table for prices, specs, rates or comparisons.
Featured snippets in SEO and AI search
For SEO, a featured snippet is a shortcut to the top of the page for a URL that already ranks in the top 10, but it does not always increase traffic. In Ahrefs’ CTR test, the #1 result below a featured snippet got about 8.6% of clicks, against about 26% for a #1 result with no snippet above it, while the snippet itself took about 19.6%. The snippet wins visibility and brand exposure, and some of the click-through goes to zero-click answers.
Today featured snippets share the screen with AI Overviews, and the same content habits help in both: a direct definition after each heading, clean lists and tables, and facts with sources. Google states that pages shown in AI features must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, so the same nosnippet and max-snippet rules control both. On international sites, Google picks snippets per language and market, so a German page needs its own German answer block, not a translated English one. I build glossary entries like this one with that pattern in mind, because the definition-first structure is what both featured snippets and GEO reward.
How to win a featured snippet
- Rank the page in the top 10 for the query first.
- Answer the question in the first sentence below a heading that repeats it.
- Format steps as an ordered list and comparisons as an HTML table.
- Keep the answer short, then expand on it in the following paragraphs.
How to remove or block a featured snippet
You block a featured snippet with the nosnippet rule, the data-nosnippet attribute or a lower max-snippet value. According to Google Search Central, only nosnippet guarantees that no featured snippet appears, while data-nosnippet hides marked text and max-snippet only reduces the chance.
| Control | Effect |
|---|---|
| meta name=”robots” content=”nosnippet” | No featured or regular snippet for the page |
| data-nosnippet on a span or div | Marked text never appears in snippets |
| max-snippet:[number] | Shorter snippets, lower chance of a featured snippet |

Frequently asked questions about Featured snippet
When did Google introduce featured snippets?
Google introduced featured snippets in January 2014. Danny Sullivan confirmed the date in Google's 2018 post that reintroduced the feature.
Does a featured snippet count as position 1?
Yes, since 22 January 2020 the featured snippet counts as one of the ten organic listings. The featured page is no longer repeated lower on page 1.
Can structured data get me a featured snippet?
No, there is no markup that makes a page a featured snippet. Google's systems choose snippets automatically from indexed pages, mostly those already ranking in the top 10.
How do I stop Google from showing my page as a featured snippet?
Add the nosnippet robots rule to the page. Google says it is the only guaranteed way, while max-snippet and data-nosnippet only limit what can be shown.
