How does Snapchat work?
Snapchat works by opening straight into the camera and sending short-lived photos and videos to friends. A Snap disappears after it is viewed unless the recipient saves it, which makes the app feel private and casual. Around the camera, the app is built from these main tabs:
- Camera: taking Snaps with AR Lenses and filters.
- Chat: private messages, voice and video calls.
- Snap Map: friends’ locations and public Snaps on a map.
- Stories: posts from friends that last 24 hours.
- Spotlight: a For You style feed of public short videos.
History of Snapchat: key dates
Snapchat was created by three Stanford students: Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown. Evan Spiegel leads Snap Inc. as its CEO.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 8 July 2011 | The app launches on iOS as Picaboo |
| September 2011 | Picaboo relaunches as Snapchat |
| October 2013 | My Story introduces 24-hour Stories |
| September 2016 | Snapchat Inc. becomes Snap Inc. and announces Spectacles |
| June 2017 | Snap Map launches |
The Stories format that Snapchat introduced in 2013 was later copied by Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, and it shaped how vertical video works across social media.
Snapchat users in numbers
Snapchat reaches almost a billion people every month. In its Q2 2026 results, Snap reported 493 million daily users (up 5% year over year): 92 million in North America, 98 million in Europe and 303 million in the rest of the world. Revenue for the quarter was 1.599 billion USD, and average revenue per user reached 3.25 USD.
DataReportal counted 709 million users reachable with Snapchat ads in January 2025. The largest markets are India (208 million), the United States (106 million) and Pakistan (37.5 million), and France (27.8 million), the United Kingdom (23.9 million) and Germany (21.7 million) lead in Europe. In Poland, DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report puts Snapchat’s ad reach at 5.71 million people, which is 15.0% of the population.
Snapchat in marketing
Snapchat matters to marketers because it reaches young adults in a private, camera-first context that other platforms do not own. Users aged 18 to 24 make up about 37% of its ad audience according to DataReportal, and 23% of Gen Z consumers name Snapchat as a primary platform in the 2026 Sprout Social Content Strategy Report.
Snapchat ad formats
Snapchat Ads Manager offers several formats, and self-serve campaigns start at 5 USD per day:
- Snap Ads: full-screen image or video ads between Stories and content.
- Story Ads: a branded tile that opens a series of 3 to 20 Snaps.
- Collection Ads: a video with four tappable product tiles.
- Dynamic Ads: catalog-based ads built automatically for each user.
- Sponsored Lenses: branded AR effects users play with and share.
- Sponsored Snaps: messages delivered to the Chat inbox.
- Commercials: non-skippable videos inside premium Shows.
Buying is auction-based and usually priced per thousand impressions (CPM), so Snapchat works best for awareness and for viral AR campaigns rather than for last-click sales.
Snapchat and search
Public Spotlight videos and creator profiles can appear in Google results, but Snapchat has a much smaller footprint in search than YouTube or TikTok. In my projects I treat it as an awareness channel for markets like France, the UK or Saudi Arabia, and I build the search side of the same campaign separately through international SEO.
Snapchat vs Instagram
| Feature | Snapchat | |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Snap Inc. | Meta |
| Default content | Disappearing Snaps and chats | Permanent posts, Stories and Reels |
| Core audience | 18 to 24 | Broader, all adult age groups |
| Signature ad format | Sponsored AR Lenses | Feed and Reels ads |
Many brands run Instagram as the main Meta channel and add Snapchat only where their target market is strong on the app.
