What is Yandex?

Yandex is Russia’s dominant search engine and a wider internet ecosystem headquartered in Moscow. It is one of the few national search engines that still beats Google in its home market, similar to Seznam in the Czech Republic in earlier years. The company earns most of its money from advertising, ride-hailing, e-commerce and cloud services.

History of Yandex: key facts

Yandex grew from a search engine into a conglomerate over almost three decades. The table lists the milestones confirmed by Yandex and public filings.

1997Search engine unveiled on 23 September at the Softool exhibition
2004Launch of Yandex.Maps
2007Opening of the Yandex School of Data Analysis
2011IPO on NASDAQ and launch of Yandex.Taxi

2024Dutch parent Yandex N.V. completes the sale of its Russian assets for about US$5.3 billion (July) and becomes Nebius Group

In the second quarter of 2026, Yandex reported revenue of RUB 386.3 billion, up 16% year on year, according to its investor relations press release.

Where is Yandex used?

Yandex is a major search engine only in Russia and parts of the former Soviet Union. Statcounter data for September 2026 shows a clear split:

  • Russia: Yandex 70.33%, Google 28.12%.
  • Poland: Google 89.56%, Bing 7.38%, Yandex 1.44%.

For a Western or Polish company, Yandex matters when it targets Russian-speaking users in Russia or the region, and it is irrelevant for most EU campaigns.

Main Yandex products for marketers

Yandex offers a full marketing stack that mirrors Google’s tools. Three of them matter most for SEO and paid search.

Yandex Webmaster

Yandex Webmaster is the equivalent of Google Search Console: you submit sitemaps, check indexing and set a target region there.

Yandex Direct

Yandex Direct is the contextual advertising system that Yandex describes as the first such service on the Russian internet, comparable to Google Ads.

Alice and YandexGPT

Alice is the voice assistant launched in 2017, and YandexGPT is the large language model released in May 2023 that powers generative features across Yandex services.

How does Yandex SEO differ from Google SEO?

Yandex SEO differs mainly in regional signals, behavioural factors and some legacy tags. According to Search Engine Journal’s Yandex guide:

  • Regionality: Yandex checks the IP address, contact details and domain data to assign a site to a region.
  • Site quality: the ICS score replaced the older link-based TIC metric and uses audience, user satisfaction and quality marks.
  • Hreflang: Yandex has supported hreflang in XML sitemaps since August 2020.
  • Meta keywords: Yandex still reads the tag, unlike Google.
  • Indexing: Yandex discovers new URLs more slowly, so sitemap submission in Webmaster helps.

In my international SEO work I treat Yandex as a separate market with its own local TLD, Russian content and Webmaster setup, never as a side effect of Google optimization.

Yandex vs Google: comparison for marketers

Yandex and Google solve the same problem, but they reward different signals and reach different audiences. The table sums up the practical differences I check before planning a market entry.

Pro tip: Check sanctions and payment rules before you budget for Yandex Direct. For organic visibility, verify the site in Yandex Webmaster and set the region manually, because Yandex treats the target region as a request, not a guarantee.
