Google Gemini is Google’s family of multimodal AI models and the AI assistant app built on them, developed by Google DeepMind. It replaced Bard in February 2024 and now powers AI answers across Search, Android and Workspace. In August 2026 Google reported that the Gemini app had passed 1 billion monthly users.

What is Google Gemini?

Google Gemini is both a family of multimodal AI models built by Google DeepMind and the consumer assistant app that runs on them. The same name covers the chatbot at gemini.google.com, the mobile apps, the assistant inside Android and Google Workspace, and the models developers call through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. Because the models also power AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, Gemini is the engine behind most generative answers in Google Search.

How does Google Gemini work?

Gemini works as a natively multimodal large language model that reads text, images, audio, video and code in one context window. You type, speak or point the camera, and the model predicts a response, optionally grounded in live Google Search results or your Gmail, Drive and Calendar data. Google’s August 2026 blog post reports that 63% of Gemini users talk to it by voice and that one in five Gemini Live sessions uses the camera or screen sharing. On Android, Gemini automates actions in more than 40 apps, for example booking a ride.

History of Gemini: from Bard to 1 billion users

Gemini started as Bard, a chatbot Google announced on 6 February 2023 in response to ChatGPT. Google renamed Bard to Gemini on 8 February 2024, after its new model family had launched.

According to Google’s announcement of 11 August 2026, the Gemini app has more than 1 billion monthly users and is the fastest-growing product in Google’s history. Alphabet had reported 950 million monthly users in its July 2026 earnings, and Google counts more than 100 million active users on iOS alone.

Gemini models and products

The Gemini ecosystem has three layers: the models, the consumer app and the integrations inside other Google products.

Gemini models

Google ships each generation in tiers: Pro for complex reasoning, Flash for speed and cost, and lighter variants for devices. Developers reach them through the Gemini API and Vertex AI.

Gemini app

The app is Google’s direct competitor to ChatGPT, with Deep Research, Gemini Live voice mode and image generation. Google says it creates more than 150 million images every day.

Gemini in Google products

Gemini runs inside Search, Workspace, Chrome and Android, and it powers creative tools such as Google Flow for video.

Why Google Gemini matters for SEO and AI search

Gemini matters to marketers because it decides which sources Google cites in AI-generated answers. When Gemini builds an AI Overview, it pulls passages from indexed pages, so classic ranking signals still apply, but clear entity data and quotable facts decide who gets the citation. In my SEO projects I treat Gemini visibility as part of Generative Engine Optimization: I check which brands Gemini names for key prompts in each market and language, then fix gaps in content and entity SEO.

  • Test your top commercial prompts in the Gemini app every month.
  • Strengthen your Google Business Profile, Knowledge Graph entity and structured data.
  • Publish concise, sourced facts that Gemini can lift into answers.
  • Track AI-referred traffic separately in your analytics.

Google Gemini vs ChatGPT

Gemini and ChatGPT differ mainly in distribution: Gemini lives inside Google’s ecosystem, ChatGPT is a standalone destination.
