An entity is anything specific and identifiable. Banana bread is an entity. So is the Statue of Liberty, so is Wrocław, so is the concept of hreflang. What makes something an entity rather than a word is that it exists independently of how you spell it, which is exactly why search engines prefer working with entities.

The standard illustration is still the best one. Write about Apple and Google has to decide whether you mean the company or the fruit. It does not guess. It reads what surrounds the word. Mention Tim Cook, iPhone or Cupertino and the page is about the company. Mention baking, fibre or cider and it is about the fruit. That disambiguation is entity recognition, and it happens on every page you publish whether you designed for it or not.

None of those queries look like the keyword strings that keyword-first SEO was built around, and matching them requires understanding what the person means, not what they typed.

3. Write with context rather than name-dropping

Mentioning Model Y proves nothing. Explaining what it is, how it compares to other EVs and where it sits in the range is what demonstrates that the page understands the subject. This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that separates entity SEO from keyword stuffing with extra nouns.

4. Mark it up

Use schema to state plainly what each thing is: Tesla as an Organization, Model Y as a Product, Musk as a Person, with sameAs pointing at the authoritative profiles. You are removing ambiguity that Google would otherwise have to resolve by inference.

5. Link internally the way things actually relate

Every mention of Model Y should link to your Model Y page. Mention electric vehicles and link to your broader EV guide. Internal linking is the cheapest entity signal available and the one most sites waste on navigation boilerplate.

6. Keep the references current

Entities change. Companies rename, executives leave, products get discontinued. A page still calling Meta by its old name in a current-year article is telling Google the content has not been maintained, and it does not need any other signal to reach that conclusion.

The difference between entity SEO and keyword SEO is what the optimization targets: keyword SEO matches phrases, entity SEO identifies what those phrases represent and how they connect.

Search “jaguar” and a keyword-first system treats it as seven characters and serves whatever ranks best for that string, whether that is the animal, the car brand or the American football team. An entity-first system reads the surrounding context. If a page discusses luxury vehicles, electric SUVs and Jaguar Land Rover, the ambiguity disappears before ranking is even considered.

Keywords do not translate; they have to be researched again in every market, and a literal translation frequently targets a phrase nobody uses. Entities do translate, because the Model Y is the Model Y in Warsaw and in Chicago. A site structured around entities can be extended into a new language coherently. A site structured around English keyword volumes usually has to be rebuilt.

None of this means keywords are obsolete. They are still how you size demand and how you check that your phrasing matches your market’s. But they are the input, not the architecture.

1. Identify the entities, not just the keywords

Do not build a page around “travel tips”. Build it around TSA PreCheck, EU roaming rules, JetBlue, carry-on limits. Specific, recognizable things are what a page can be authoritative about; generic phrases are not.

2. Cover the topic like someone who knows it

Writing about the Galaxy Watch, stopping at the product name and adding some adjectives is not coverage. Wear OS, the competing Apple Watch, the sensor set, the health features: these are what a subject-matter expert would inevitably mention, and their absence is as informative as their presence.

3. Define your entities with structured data

Schema for people, products, organizations and places, with sameAs properties pointing at authoritative sources. This is the only place you get to state facts rather than imply them, and it is remarkable how many large sites still leave it empty.

4. Build internal links that mirror real relationships

An article on blockchain should link to smart contracts, Ethereum and decentralized finance. Not because internal links are a ranking trick, but because those connections exist and reproducing them makes the site legible.

5. Reference authoritative entities

Claiming expertise is weak. Citing PubMed, the Mayo Clinic or a named researcher when writing about health places your content in recognized company, and association with credible entities is itself a signal. This is where E-E-A-T stops being abstract and becomes something you implement.

6. Keep entity references accurate

Wrong CEO, outdated product name, superseded legislation: each of these is a small factual error and a large freshness signal. Entities have current states, and Google knows what they are.

7. Audit coverage with NLP tools

Run existing content through an entity checker and look for what is missing. If you are targeting sustainable fashion without mentioning carbon footprint or certification schemes, the semantic gap is measurable, and closing it is usually faster than writing anything new.
