SEO costs $500 to $5,000 per month for most businesses, with an average of $2,917 per month across 439 providers surveyed by Ahrefs. Hourly SEO rates average $111, and one-off projects such as audits usually cost $2,500 to $5,000. The price you pay depends on 3 things more than anything else: the provider type, the market you compete in and the amount of content and links your competitors force you to match. I am Adrian Dąbrowiecki, founder of Marketer Coffee, and below you will find SEO prices by pricing model, provider, business type, country and individual service, plus a method for setting your own SEO budget.
How Much Does SEO Cost?
SEO costs between $250 and $10,000 per month, and 63% of businesses spend between $500 and $5,000 per month, according to the Ahrefs SEO pricing survey of 439 SEO service providers. SEO agencies charge an average of $3,209 per month, SEO consultants $3,250 per month and SEO freelancers $1,348 per month.
The SEO cost averages hide a wide spread. A local business with one location pays a fraction of what an online store with 20,000 products pays, because the online store needs more technical work, more content and more links to rank. The table below summarizes typical SEO prices in 2026.
| SEO service | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly SEO retainer (average) | $2,917 per month | Ahrefs, 439 providers |
| Local SEO | $1,557 per month | Ahrefs |
| Hourly SEO rate (average) | $111 per hour | Ahrefs |
| One-off SEO project (most common band) | $2,501 to $5,000 | Ahrefs |
| Quality backlink (average) | $508.95 per link | Editorial.Link |
| 1,000-word SEO article (Central Europe) | $50 to $100 | Szymon Słowik, takaoto.pro |
| SEO tool subscription (entry plan) | $129 to $139.95 per month | Ahrefs and Semrush pricing |
What Are the SEO Pricing Models?
SEO is priced in 4 models: monthly retainer, hourly rate, per-project fee and performance-based pricing. The Ahrefs survey found that 78.2% of SEO providers charge a monthly retainer, 48.9% charge per project and 34.8% charge by the hour. Most providers offer more than one model, which is why the percentages add up to more than 100%.

Monthly retainer
A monthly SEO retainer costs $501 to $1,000 per month most often, with 20.4% of providers charging that band, while the average retainer reaches $2,917 per month. The gap between the most common band and the average comes from a smaller group of providers charging $5,000 to $50,000 per month for enterprise programs. In the United States and Canada, 79.1% of SEO providers charge at least $1,001 per month.
The monthly retainer is the default SEO pricing model because SEO compounds over months. The SE Ranking and Duda survey of 260 agencies found that 53% of agencies prefer monthly retainers over every other pricing model, and 85% bundle SEO services into fixed packages.
Hourly rate
Hourly SEO rates average $111 per hour, with $75 to $100 and $100 to $150 as the 2 most common bands. SEO consultants charge the most per hour at an average of $171.18, SEO agencies charge $98.90 per hour and SEO freelancers charge $71.59 per hour, according to Ahrefs. Only 4.1% of providers charge more than $200 per hour.
Hourly pricing fits short, defined tasks such as a strategy consultation, a migration review or a second opinion on an audit. Hourly pricing fits ongoing SEO badly, because the client pays for time rather than for output.
Per-project fee
A one-off SEO project costs $2,501 to $5,000 most often, while SEO agencies average $9,507.84 per project. The most common project fee for SEO freelancers is $101 to $250, for SEO agencies $2,501 to $5,000 and for SEO consultants $5,001 to $10,000. Typical SEO projects are a technical audit, a website migration, a keyword strategy and a content plan.
Performance-based pricing
Performance-based SEO charges per ranking, per keyword or per sale, and the model rewards the provider for metrics that rarely match revenue. A provider paid per keyword in the top 10 picks easy keywords with no commercial intent, because easy keywords pay the same as hard ones. Agencja KS, a Polish SEO agency, describes pay-per-result SEO as a risky model that reputable agencies use less and less, because clients end up paying for keywords that bring no profit.
Accept performance-based SEO only if the metric is revenue or qualified leads tracked in your own analytics, not rankings reported by the provider.
How Much Does SEO Cost by Provider Type?
SEO freelancers cost the least at an average of $1,348 per month, SEO agencies and SEO consultants cost about $3,200 per month, and an in-house SEO specialist costs about $71,000 per year in base salary in the United States. Ahrefs found that SEO agencies charge 138% more than SEO freelancers.
| Provider | Average monthly cost | Average hourly rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO freelancer | $1,348 | $71.59 | Single tasks, small local sites |
| SEO agency | $3,209 | $98.90 | Ongoing SEO needing content, links and development |
| SEO consultant | $3,250 | $171.18 | Strategy, audits, senior oversight of an internal team |
| In-house SEO specialist (US) | $71,076 per year base salary | n/a | Large sites with daily SEO work |

The in-house salary figure comes from Indeed, which reports an average base salary of $71,076 per year for an SEO specialist in the United States, based on 857 job postings. The in-house cost excludes SEO tools, content, links and benefits, so the full cost of an in-house SEO specialist runs well above the base salary.
Experience moves the SEO price more than the provider type. SEO providers in business for 2 years or less charge an average retainer of $1,540.52 per month, while providers with 5 to 10 years in business charge $3,648.28 per month, more than double.
How Much Does SEO Cost by Business Type?
Local SEO and small business SEO cost about $1,557 per month on average, ecommerce SEO costs $3,000 to $10,000+ per month, and enterprise SEO starts around $5,000 per month. The business type sets how many pages need work and how strong the competition is, which drives the hours behind the price.

Local and small business SEO
Local SEO costs $1,557 per month on average, with SEO agencies charging $1,819 and SEO freelancers $1,150, according to Ahrefs. About 42% of SEO providers charge between $250 and $1,000 per month, which is the range most small businesses buy in. In Poland, Agencja KS lists Google Business Profile positioning from 490 PLN net per month and local website SEO from 1,290 PLN per month.
Ecommerce SEO
Ecommerce SEO costs $3,000 to $10,000+ per month for serious work on product pages, category pages and technical SEO, according to the US agency Arc Intermedia. Ecommerce SEO costs more because online stores create thousands of URLs through filters, sorting and product variants. Agencja KS starts ecommerce SEO at 3,490 PLN net per month in Poland and notes that large stores pay tens of thousands of PLN per month. Read more about the work involved in our Ecommerce SEO: Complete Guide for 2026.
SaaS and B2B SEO
SaaS and B2B SEO usually costs $2,500 to $5,000+ per month, because B2B SaaS companies need 4 to 8 articles per month to build topical authority, according to UK SEO pricing data published by Whito. High-quality B2B SaaS backlinks cost $500 to $1,500 each, which makes link building the largest variable cost in SaaS SEO. See the full process in B2B SaaS SEO: Complete Guide for 2026.
Enterprise SEO
Enterprise SEO costs £5,000 to £20,000+ per month in the UK and €6,000 to €30,000+ per month in Germany. Enterprise SEO covers sites with tens of thousands of pages, several markets and internal teams that need coordination. The SEO price reflects project management and development hours as much as pure SEO work. More in Enterprise SEO: Complete Guide for 2026.
How Much Does SEO Cost by Country?
SEO costs the most in the United States and the UK, about 20% to 50% less in Germany, and 30% to 60% less in Poland and Central Europe for the same scope. Ahrefs found that providers serving worldwide markets charge 123.1% more per month than providers serving local markets, which shows how strongly the market sets the SEO price.
| Market | Typical monthly SEO cost | Typical hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,001+ for 79.1% of providers; $3,000 to $10,000 for full scope | $75 to $200 for 66.7% of providers |
| United Kingdom | £500 to £2,000 for most businesses; £1,500+ for meaningful national SEO | £75 to £250 |
| Germany (DACH) | €800 to €2,500 for most SMEs | €60 to €100 for freelancers |
| Poland and Central Europe | 1,290 to 3,490+ PLN net at entry level | $50 to $99 |
| India | $1,000 or less for 76% of providers | $30 or less for 85.7% of providers |
United States
US SEO agencies charge $3,000 to $10,000 per month for a full SEO scope, and 66.7% of US and Canadian SEO providers charge $75 to $200 per hour. The US market has the widest price range, with some providers charging $25,001 to $50,000 per month. Market specifics are covered in International SEO Services in the USA.
United Kingdom
UK businesses pay £500 to £2,000 per month for SEO in most cases, while national B2B campaigns need £1,500 to £2,500 per month to produce measurable results. Whitehat SEO, a UK agency, warns that SEO budgets under £1,000 per month carry a high risk of producing no results. See International SEO Services in the United Kingdom.
Germany
German SMEs pay €800 to €2,500 per month for SEO, and comprehensive programs with technical SEO, content and link building cost €3,000 to €5,000 per month, according to the German edition of the Ahrefs blog. The Freelancer-Kompass 2026 published by freelancermap puts the median SEO freelancer rate in the DACH region at €80 per hour. See International SEO Services in Germany.
Poland and Central Europe
SEO specialists in Central Europe charge $50 to $99 per hour in most cases, according to Szymon Słowik, founder of the Polish SEO agency takaoto.pro. His comparison of Clutch profiles and his agency’s own campaign costs shows the following average prices per market.
| Country | Man-hour (USD) | 1,000-word article (USD) | Average link (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | 94 | 92 | 235 |
| Greece | 82 | 104 | 140 |
| Croatia | 76 | 51 | 99 |
| Czech Republic | 69 | 89 | 124 |
| Lithuania | 68 | 74 | 86 |
| Bulgaria | 67 | 57 | 82 |
| Poland | 62 | 88 | 164 |
| Romania | 62 | 44 | 118 |
| Slovakia | 59 | 90 | 122 |
| Hungary | 57 | 69 | 111 |
Słowik priced the same sample campaign (25 hours of SEO work, 20 articles of 1,000 words and 20 links) in each market. The campaign costs $4,950 in Poland, $6,540 in Germany, $4,745 in the Czech Republic and $3,610 in Romania. Słowik adds that real SEO in Germany costs far more than this comparison suggests, because German competition forces a larger scope.

How Much Do Individual SEO Services Cost?
An SEO audit costs $1,000 to $5,000, a 1,000-word SEO article costs $50 to $300, a quality backlink costs $300 to $600, and SEO tools cost $129 to $500 per month. Most monthly SEO retainers bundle these services, so the line items below show what a retainer pays for.

SEO audit
An SEO audit costs about $1,500 to $1,875 for a local WordPress site and $3,000 to $3,750 for a multilingual ecommerce site, based on 20 to 25 hours and 40 to 50 hours of work at $75 per hour, as calculated by Szymon Słowik. Audits of large ecommerce sites reach $5,000. In the DACH market, one-off SEO projects such as a technical audit cost €1,000 to €5,000. Many agencies, including Marketer Coffee, include the first audit for free when the client signs a retainer.
SEO content
A 1,000-word SEO article costs $50 to $100 in Central Europe and £100 to £300 in the UK, while pillar pages cost £1,000 to £3,000+. The Orbit Media blogger survey of 808 marketers found that the average blog post has 1,333 words and takes about 3 hours and 25 minutes to write. Articles by subject experts in finance, health or engineering cost up to 50% more than general content, according to Słowik.
Link building
A high-quality backlink costs $508.95 on average, and 32% to 36% of a typical SEO budget goes to link building, according to link building statistics compiled by Editorial.Link and BloggersPassion. BuzzStream’s 2026 analysis of 257,267 sites found that a guest post costs $461 through a vendor and $295 when bought directly from the publisher. Links on DR 71+ sites average $2,025, according to Adsy. In Poland, sponsored articles on nationwide news portals average $761, and on local portals $167, according to Słowik.
SEO tools
SEO tools cost $129 to $500 per month per tool for agency-grade plans. Ahrefs Lite costs $129 per month, Semrush Pro costs $139.95 per month, and the mid-tier plans of both tools cost about $250 per month. Agencies spread tool costs across clients, which is why tool access is one of the hidden savings of an SEO retainer compared with an in-house hire.
AI search optimization
AI search optimization costs about $937 per month on average among agencies that price it as a separate service, according to the SE Ranking and Duda agency survey. AI search optimization covers visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. UK agency Whitehat SEO recommends allocating 15% to 25% of the total SEO budget to answer engine optimization in 2026.
What Affects the Price of SEO?
The price of SEO depends on 7 factors: competition, site size, technical condition, number of markets, content gap, link gap and provider experience. Every serious SEO quote is built from these 7 factors, converted into hours, articles and links.
- Competition in your niche. A personal injury law firm in London competes with firms spending £10,000+ per month on SEO, so the same keywords cost more to win.
- Site size. A 50-page service site and a 20,000-product store need different technical work, different crawling and different reporting.
- Technical condition. Indexation problems, slow templates and duplicate URLs add development hours before content starts working.
- Number of markets and languages. Each extra market needs its own keyword research, content and local links, and hreflang errors multiply with every language version.
- Content gap against competitors. The number of pages competitors have and you lack sets the content budget.
- Link gap against competitors. The number of referring domains competitors have sets the link building budget.
- Provider experience. SEO providers with 5 to 10 years in business charge more than double the rate of providers with 2 years or less.

The fastest way to estimate factors 5 and 6 is a structured comparison against the sites outranking you. The method is described step by step in Competitor Analysis in SEO in 7 Steps.
How Much Should You Budget for SEO?
Budget SEO by working back from the gap to your competitors, not from a percentage of revenue. A budget built from the gap tells you what it takes to compete; a budget built from a percentage tells you only what you can afford.
To set an SEO budget, follow 4 steps.
- Count the content gap. List the pages your top 3 competitors rank with and you lack. Multiply the number of pages by the cost per article in your market.
- Count the link gap. Compare referring domains with your top 3 competitors. Multiply the difference by the average cost per link in your niche, then spread the total over 12 months.
- Add the work hours. Add 15 to 30 hours per month for strategy, technical fixes, optimization and reporting, multiplied by the hourly rate of your provider.
- Check the payback. Divide the monthly SEO cost by the profit per new customer. The result is the number of extra customers per month SEO needs to bring to break even.

Take a monthly SEO budget of $3,000 and a profit of $250 per customer. SEO needs to bring 12 extra customers per month to break even, and every customer above 12 is return on the SEO investment. The method to track that number is covered in Measuring SEO: How to track SEO results?, and the planning side in How to create SEO strategy that works in 2026.
Is Cheap SEO Worth It?
SEO under $500 per month rarely produces results, because the budget does not cover technical work, content and link building at the same time. UK pricing research by Whito reaches the same conclusion at £500 per month. A $300 package buys about 3 hours of agency time, which is enough for a report and not enough for the work the report recommends.
Watch for 5 warning signs in cheap SEO offers:
- Guaranteed rankings. No provider controls Google rankings, so a guarantee means the provider picks keywords nobody searches for.
- Hundreds of links for a few hundred dollars. BuzzStream research found that only 7.6% of guest post sites meet quality standards, so bulk links come from the other 92.4%.
- Links that disappear after the contract ends. Rented links and private blog networks stop working when payment stops, and Google treats private blog networks as spam.
- No access to your own data. Content, analytics and link lists belong in your accounts from day one.
- Reports in rankings only. A report without traffic, leads or revenue hides whether SEO is paying back.

Cheap SEO often relies on tactics that work briefly and then trigger penalties. The risks are explained in Black Hat SEO: Definition, Benefits, and How to Use It?
How Long Before SEO Pays Back?
SEO pays back in 6 to 12 months for most businesses, while technical fixes on an established site move traffic in 4 to 8 weeks. Entering a new market from zero takes 6 to 12 months, depending on existing authority, competition and how fast content ships.
The payback time explains why SEO contracts in the UK typically require a 6 to 12 month initial commitment. Two Marketer Coffee projects show the range: Galeria Zapachu gained 84% more traffic in 28 days from technical quick wins, and Planika Fires went from an unindexed domain to 1,052 monthly US visits with 7 articles and no link building. The long-term case for the investment is laid out in 15 Key SEO Benefits: Why Business should invest in SEO?
Is SEO Cheaper From a Central European Agency?
SEO from a Central European agency costs 40% to 60% less than the same scope from a US or UK agency, because labour costs differ while the work is the same. Hourly rates in Poland average $62 against $94 in Germany and $100+ in the US, according to the data above. The difference applies to strategy, technical SEO, project management and reporting.
The difference does not apply to everything. Native content and local links in the target market cost the local market price, wherever the agency sits. A Central European agency saves money when the scope includes a large share of strategy and technical work, and when the team runs content in native-level quality for each language. A list of agencies operating from the region is in 10 Top SEO Agencies in Poland: 2026 Ranking.
FAQ: SEO Pricing
The answers below cover the SEO pricing questions businesses ask most often before signing a contract.
How much does SEO cost per month?
SEO costs $2,917 per month on average, with most businesses paying $500 to $5,000 per month. SEO freelancers charge about $1,348 per month and SEO agencies about $3,209 per month, according to Ahrefs.
How much does SEO cost for a small business?
SEO for a small business costs about $1,557 per month on average, and 42% of SEO providers charge $250 to $1,000 per month. Local businesses in less competitive niches pay at the lower end of the range.
What is the average hourly rate for SEO?
The average hourly rate for SEO is $111. SEO consultants charge $171.18 per hour, SEO agencies $98.90 and SEO freelancers $71.59. In Central Europe, most SEO specialists charge $50 to $99 per hour.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
An SEO audit costs $1,500 to $5,000, depending on site size and the number of markets. A local service site needs 20 to 25 hours of analysis, while a multilingual online store needs 40 to 50 hours.
How much does link building cost?
A quality backlink costs about $508.95 on average, and links from high-authority sites cost $1,500 or more. Guest posts cost $295 bought directly from the publisher and $461 bought through a vendor, according to BuzzStream.
Why do SEO prices vary so much?
SEO prices vary because the scope varies: competition, site size, technical condition and the number of markets decide how many hours, articles and links a project needs. Two quotes for “SEO” can describe completely different amounts of work, so compare quotes by deliverables, not by the monthly total.
Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?
SEO is cheaper than Google Ads over 12 months or more, because organic traffic keeps coming without a cost per click. Google Ads delivers traffic from day one and stops when the budget stops, so most businesses run Google Ads for short-term demand while SEO builds. Our approach to paid search is described on Google Ads Services.
