AI assistants do not keep one memory of your brand. What ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude “remembers” comes from three separate layers: what the model learned in training, what it retrieves from the web at answer time, and what a single user has allowed it to store about them. Each layer lives in a different place, follows different rules and responds to different kinds of work.

The model itself does not learn from your conversation with it. Its weights change only when the vendor trains a new version. Everything that feels like memory between sessions, from “remember that I prefer vegan products” to “last time you recommended this CRM”, is a system around the model that saves notes or searches past chats and feeds them back in.

For brands, that gives a clear split. You can influence training data and live retrieval, slowly and quickly respectively. You cannot write to a user’s personal memory, but you can make sure that when a user’s preferences meet your category, the facts the assistant finds about you are correct and easy to match.

Below we explain each layer, show how ChatGPT Memory, Gemini’s personal context and Claude’s memory actually work according to their makers, with dates, and turn that into a plan for marketing teams.

What are the different ways an AI assistant remembers something?

There are four mechanisms that people call memory, and only one of them changes the model.

Four kinds of AI “memory” and what a brand can do about each
LayerWhere it livesLasts across sessions?Who controls itBrand influence
Training dataModel weights, fixed at a knowledge cutoffYes, for every user, until the next modelThe vendor; publishers via training crawlersIndirect and slow: be well represented across the web
Live retrievalSearch indexes and pages fetched at answer timeNo, rebuilt for each promptThe vendor’s search stack; publishers via search crawlersDirect and fast: crawlable, clear, cited pages
User memorySaved notes and past chats in the user’s accountYes, for that one user onlyThe user, within vendor settingsNone directly; only through accurate public facts
Context windowThe current conversation and uploaded filesNo, ends with the chatThe userOnly if the user pastes or uploads your content

A bigger context window is often confused with memory. It only means the assistant can hold more text in one conversation. Close the chat and, unless a memory feature saved something, it is gone.

How does training data shape what an AI knows about your brand?

Training data is the assistant’s long-term, shared knowledge, and it is frozen at the model’s cutoff date. If your brand was rarely or inconsistently described on the public web before that date, the model may know little about you, confuse you with a similar name or repeat outdated facts. Vendors list each model’s knowledge cutoff in their model documentation.

Publishers have a say over future training through dedicated crawlers, each documented by its vendor:

  • GPTBot (OpenAI). Disallowing it “indicates a site’s content should not be used in training generative AI foundation models”, according to OpenAI’s crawler documentation.
  • ClaudeBot (Anthropic). Anthropic’s help center says blocking it signals that the site’s future content should be excluded from training datasets.
  • Google-Extended (Google). A robots.txt product token that controls whether content Google crawls can be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps. Google states it “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal”.

Whether to allow training is a business decision. Blocking training crawlers keeps future content out of new models, but it does not erase what earlier models already learned, and it means newer models learn about you only from what others write. For most brands that want to be recommended, the stronger move is to make sure the public record about them is accurate, consistent and plentiful. Our entity SEO guide explains how to build that record.

How does live retrieval change the answer from one session to the next?

Retrieval is the layer that “remembers” your latest content, because it reads the web again for each prompt that needs it. When an assistant searches, it builds the answer from pages it can reach right now. That is why the same question can produce a different answer next week: new pages were published, rankings moved or a page became unreachable.

Search crawlers are separate from training crawlers, which lets a brand stay visible in answers without contributing to training:

  • OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI). OpenAI says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User (Anthropic). Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot prevents indexing for search and may reduce visibility, and blocking Claude-User prevents Claude from retrieving your content when a user asks a question.
  • Googlebot (Google). Gemini Apps can ground answers in the Google Search index, per Google’s crawler documentation.

Retrieval is where most brands win or lose in the short term. We cover the mechanics for ChatGPT in our guide to how ChatGPT search works, and the strategy difference in GEO vs SEO.

How does ChatGPT Memory work?

ChatGPT Memory has two parts: saved memories that the user can see and edit, and the ability to reference past chat history. OpenAI’s announcement page traces how it developed:

  • February 13, 2024: OpenAI began testing memory with a small group of Free and Plus users.
  • September 5, 2024: memory became available to Free, Plus, Team and Enterprise users, with notifications when memories are updated.
  • April 10, 2025: memory started referencing all past conversations for Plus and Pro users, with Team, Enterprise and Edu to follow.
  • June 3, 2025: memory improvements began rolling out to Free users, who get references to recent conversations.

Four details matter for understanding what persists:

  1. Users can turn off saved memories or chat history referencing separately in Settings.
  2. “Deleting a chat doesn’t erase its memories; you must delete the memory itself,” in OpenAI’s words.
  3. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not use memory and are not used to train models.
  4. Each custom GPT has its own memory. OpenAI also says it may use content provided to ChatGPT, including memories, to improve its models unless the user turns that off in Data Controls.

Memory also reaches shopping. OpenAI’s shopping help article says ChatGPT considers the query, Memory and custom instructions when deciding which products are relevant. A user who once told ChatGPT they only buy cruelty-free cosmetics can see that preference applied to a later product search.

How does Gemini remember past chats?

Gemini stores “Saved info” that users add, and since August 2025 it can also personalize answers from past chats. Google announced the past-chats personalization on August 13, 2025. At launch it was on by default, worked with the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, was limited to select countries and to consumer accounts of users over 18.

From Google’s announcement and Gemini Apps Help:

  • Users manage it in Settings under Personal context, where they can turn it off and add, edit or delete saved info. Users can also ask Gemini to remember something during a chat.
  • When personal context shapes an answer, Gemini may show “Your saved info” under sources, though Google notes the label can occasionally be wrong.
  • Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or activity, are not used for personalization or training, and are kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback.
  • Google renamed Gemini Apps Activity to Keep Activity. With it on, a sample of uploads submitted from September 2, 2025 may be used to help improve Google services.
  • Referencing past chats is being released gradually in the mobile app, and the feature is not available in Gemini Live conversations.

How does Claude memory work?

Claude remembers through two features: chat search, which looks up past conversations when needed, and memory, which saves topics that carry into new chats. Anthropic’s announcement page gives the rollout: memory reached Team and Enterprise plans on September 11, 2025, and Pro and Max plans on October 23, 2025. PCWorld reported on March 4, 2026 that memory had come to the free plan.

According to Anthropic’s help center as of November 2026:

  • Memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max plans. On Team and Enterprise, owners control availability and memory is off for each member until they turn it on.
  • Claude saves memory as individual topics during the chat, and users can ask it directly to remember, change or forget something.
  • Sensitive topics such as health or politics are not saved by default.
  • Each project has its own memory, and project chats do not use memory from other projects.
  • Incognito chats are not saved to memory or history and are not used when Claude searches previous conversations.
  • Users can import memories from other assistants or export Claude’s memory; Anthropic labels this experimental.

What does user memory mean for brands?

User memory is a filter applied on top of retrieval and training, not a new place to rank. No vendor offers a way for a brand to write to, read or buy space in a user’s memory. What memory changes is which brands fit a user’s stated needs.

Three practical consequences:

  • Attributes beat slogans. If a user’s memory says “budget under $500”, “ships to Germany” or “vegan only”, the assistant needs those facts about you in a form it can match. Prices, shipping regions, materials and certifications should be explicit on your pages and in product data.
  • First impressions persist. If an assistant recommended you and the user saved a preference for your brand, that note can follow them. If an early answer was wrong, a corrected page today can fix future retrieval, but it does not edit what the user already saved.
  • Monitoring gets harder. Two people asking the same question can get different brand lists because their memories differ. A single screenshot from a colleague’s account is not a measurement.

How should a brand test what AI assistants remember about it?

  1. Use clean sessions. Run tests in ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Gemini Temporary Chat or Claude incognito, so personal memory does not skew results.
  2. Separate training from retrieval. Ask once with web search off where the product allows it, which shows what the model learned, and once with search on, which shows what it finds now.
  3. Use buyer-style prompts. Include constraints a real user would have saved, such as budget, country or values.
  4. Log results. Record whether you were mentioned, cited or missing, which competitors appeared and which sources were linked.
  5. Measure traffic. Track AI assistant referrals in GA4 as their own channel, as in our SEO tracking guide.
  6. Repeat monthly. Answers change as indexes and models change, so one test is a snapshot, not a verdict.

What should a brand do in each layer?

  • Training: decide your stance on GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended; publish consistent entity facts on your site, in directories, on partner sites and in industry press.
  • Retrieval: allow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot; answer specific buyer questions with clear, sourced pages; keep Bing and Google indexing healthy.
  • User memory: make attributes explicit (price, region, materials, compliance) so the assistant can match you to saved preferences; keep product feeds and Product schema accurate.
  • Context window: provide downloadable spec sheets and comparison pages that users are likely to paste or upload when evaluating suppliers.

Who should work with Marketer Coffee on AI brand memory?

Marketer Coffee is an AI SEO and GEO agency for brands that sell across markets and languages and want a consistent, correct presence in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Our results come from other industries, which we say plainly:

  • Planika, a design fireplace brand. Seven US-localized articles took a site Google had not indexed to 1,052 monthly US visits, with Ahrefs recording 401 Google AI Overview mentions, 136 Perplexity mentions and 20 ChatGPT mentions. Read the Planika case study.
  • Galeria Zapachu 24, fragrance ecommerce. From DR 1.4 and no link building, 750 product descriptions, more than 60 category descriptions and 30 articles led within 12 months to more than 9,100 ranking keywords, an estimated 21,200+ monthly visits (Ahrefs), a Top 10 position for “perfumy” in Poland and a 35% higher average order value, within strict legal limits on product wording. Read the Galeria Zapachu case study.
  • Aldi.pl, retail. Organic clicks grew from 367,127 to 852,724 a month in 12 months (+132%) through product content, Product schema, a leaner architecture and unified store data. Read the Aldi case study.

Who it does not fit: teams looking for a way to insert their brand into users’ private memories. That is not possible, and no honest agency offers it.

Frequently asked questions about how AI remembers content

Does ChatGPT learn from my conversations in real time?

No. The model’s weights do not change during a chat. ChatGPT Memory saves notes and references past chats so the system can add them to future prompts. OpenAI says it may use content, including memories, to improve future models unless the user turns that off in Data Controls.

Can a brand get into a user’s ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude memory?

Not directly. Users and vendors control memory. A brand can only make its public facts accurate and specific, so assistants match it correctly when a user’s saved preferences apply.

Does blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot remove my brand from AI answers?

No. Those crawlers relate to model training. Search visibility depends on OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT and Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User for Claude, according to OpenAI and Anthropic documentation.

Does deleting a chat delete what the AI remembers?

Not always. OpenAI states that deleting a chat does not erase memories made from it; the memory must be deleted itself. Gemini keeps saved info in Personal context and Claude keeps memory topics in Settings, where each can be edited or deleted.

How do I check what an AI assistant knows about my brand without my own memory affecting it?

Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Gemini Temporary Chat or Claude incognito chat, and compare answers with web search on and off.

What is the takeaway for marketing teams?

AI memory is a stack: slow shared knowledge from training, fast shared knowledge from retrieval and private per-user memory on top. Brands win the first two with an accurate, consistent public record and pages that answer buyer questions, and they serve the third by making every attribute a user might care about explicit and easy to match.
