What is DuckDuckGo? Definition, history and how it works

DuckDuckGo is a privacy-focused search engine, founded by Gabriel Weinberg in 2008, that does not build user profiles and shows the same results to everyone for the same query. According to Statcounter, it held 0.74% of the worldwide search market in September 2026 and 1.75% in the United States. The company also makes a private web browser, a VPN subscription and the Duck.ai chat assistant.

How does DuckDuckGo work?

DuckDuckGo works as a metasearch engine that combines Bing’s index with its own crawler and specialised data sources. Its help pages state that traditional links and images come mostly from Bing, while DuckDuckBot crawls the web and Instant Answers draw on providers such as Wikipedia, Sportradar and Tripadvisor. On top of these sources, DuckDuckGo applies its own ranking and layout.

The privacy model rests on three rules:

  • No search history tied to a person or an IP address.
  • No ads based on personal profiles, only on the current query.
  • No personalised rankings, so two users see the same results.

Users also get “bangs”, shortcuts such as !w or !a that send a query straight to another site. According to Wikipedia, there were 13,566 bangs in May 2026.

DuckDuckGo market share

DuckDuckGo is a niche engine with under 1% of global searches but a loyal, privacy-aware audience. Statcounter’s September 2026 data shows these shares across all devices:

MarketDuckDuckGoGoogleBing
Worldwide0.74%89.94%5.29%
United States1.75%85.19%9.89%
Poland0.79%89.56%7.38%

In the US, DuckDuckGo is the 4th largest search engine after Google, Bing and Yahoo.

How does DuckDuckGo make money?

DuckDuckGo earns money mainly from ads matched to the search query, not to the person. Its help pages explain that Microsoft’s ad network handles most ad clicks, so DuckDuckGo ads are bought through Microsoft Advertising. Since April 2024 a second stream comes from the DuckDuckGo subscription, which bundles a VPN, advanced Duck.ai models, personal information removal and identity theft restoration.

DuckDuckGo in SEO and marketing

DuckDuckGo matters for SEO because good Bing visibility translates almost directly into DuckDuckGo visibility. Optimising for it means:

  • Verifying the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting a sitemap there.
  • Checking that robots.txt does not block Bingbot or DuckDuckBot.
  • Building clear entity data, since Instant Answers pull from Wikipedia and other references.
  • Running search ads through Microsoft Advertising, which also serves DuckDuckGo.

In my international SEO projects, DuckDuckGo shows up in analytics mostly for tech, privacy and developer audiences in the US and Western Europe. Because there is no personalisation, it is also a quick way to see neutral rankings without your own browsing history. Other privacy-first alternatives worth tracking are Brave Search and Ecosia.

Pro tip: Check your top pages in Bing Webmaster Tools before anything else. If a URL is missing from Bing’s index, it is usually missing from DuckDuckGo too, and from AI tools that rely on Bing data.

Small engines like DuckDuckGo depend on Bing data, and so do several AI assistants, so a site missing from Bing loses visibility in more places than it looks. I check index coverage across Google, Bing and AI search for every market my clients sell in.

I help SaaS and e-commerce brands win organic traffic across Europe and the US, and get their brand recommended in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Every project starts with a free audit of your site, your markets and your visibility in AI answers.
