How do you calculate cost per lead?
You calculate CPL by dividing the total cost of a campaign by the number of leads it generated:
CPL = campaign cost / number of leads
The cost should include everything you spend to win those leads in the chosen period: media spend, and optionally agency fees, creative production and tool costs. Keep the definition the same in every report, because a CPL that includes fees cannot be compared with one that counts media only.
Cost per lead: a worked example
A B2B software company spends 3,000 USD on Google Ads in March. The campaign brings 1,200 clicks and 48 demo requests.
- Divide spend by leads: 3,000 USD / 48 = 62.50 USD CPL.
- Check the conversion rate: 48 / 1,200 = 4% of clicks become leads.
- Compare with lead value: if 1 in 8 demos closes and a customer is worth 4,000 USD, each lead is worth 500 USD, so a 62.50 USD CPL is profitable.
The same example shows the two levers for lowering CPL: a cheaper cost per click or a higher landing page conversion rate.
What is a good cost per lead? Benchmarks
A good CPL is one that stays below the value of a lead for your business, but industry averages help set expectations. LocaliQ’s search advertising benchmarks (Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns, updated June 2026) give these averages:
| Industry (search ads) | Average CPL |
|---|---|
| Attorneys and legal services | 131.63 USD |
| Real estate | 102.51 USD |
| Business services | 93.69 USD |
| Education | 77.48 USD |
| Finance and insurance | 74.44 USD |
| Restaurants and food | 30.57 USD |
| All industries | 66.69 USD |
Social leads are usually cheaper. WordStream’s 2025 Facebook benchmarks, based on 726 US campaigns from April 2024 to June 2025, put the median CPL for lead campaigns at 27.66 USD, up 20.94% on the previous year. Treat lower social CPLs with care: form leads collected inside Facebook often convert to sales less often than search leads.
CPL vs CPA vs CAC
CPL, CPA and CAC measure cost at three different stages of the funnel.
| Metric | What it measures | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| CPL | Cost of one lead (contact details) | Cost / leads |
| CPA | Cost of one chosen action, which can be a lead, sign-up or purchase | Cost / conversions |
| CAC | Cost of one paying customer, usually with all sales and marketing costs | Total acquisition cost / new customers |
In lead generation, CPL is a special case of CPA where the conversion is a lead. Google Ads optimises for it through Target CPA bidding, which sets bids so that the average cost per conversion stays close to your target.
How to lower cost per lead
You lower CPL by improving either traffic cost or conversion rate. These steps work in most accounts:
- Exclude irrelevant search terms with negative keywords.
- Shorten forms to the fields sales really needs.
- Match each ad group to a landing page with the same promise.
- Track lead quality in a CRM and feed qualified leads back to the ad platform.
- Test SEO for high-intent queries, where organic leads have no media cost.
In my B2B projects the cheapest leads in the long run come from organic search, because a ranking page keeps producing leads after the budget stops. I combine both channels in Google Ads management and B2B SEO services.
Frequently asked questions about CPL
How do you calculate cost per lead?
Divide the total cost of a campaign by the number of leads it generated. For example, 3,000 USD of ad spend and 48 leads give a CPL of 62.50 USD.
What is a good cost per lead?
A good CPL is lower than what a lead is worth to your business. As a reference, LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks show an average of 66.69 USD for search ads, from about 30 USD in restaurants to over 130 USD in legal services.
What is the difference between CPL and CPA?
CPL counts only leads, while CPA can measure the cost of any chosen action, such as a purchase or sign-up. In lead generation campaigns, CPL and CPA are often the same number.
Is a lower CPL always better?
A lower CPL is not always better, because cheap leads can be low quality. Compare CPL with the share of leads that become customers and with customer acquisition cost.
