What is Instagram? Definition, history and how it works

Instagram is a photo and video social network owned by Meta Platforms, where users share posts, Stories and short Reels with followers and with people who discover them through recommendations. Mark Zuckerberg announced on 24 September 2025 that Instagram had reached 3 billion monthly active users. For marketers it is one of the largest paid and organic channels in the world and, since July 2025, a source of content indexed by Google.

How does Instagram work?

Instagram works by showing each user a mix of posts from followed accounts and algorithmic recommendations across several surfaces. Users publish photos, carousels and videos to a profile grid, post 24-hour Stories, and record vertical Instagram Reels. Private conversations run in Direct messages. In 2025 Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram since October 2018, said that messaging, Reels and recommendations drive most of the app’s recent growth.

The main surfaces are:

  • Feed: posts from followed accounts mixed with suggested content.
  • Stories: vertical posts that disappear after 24 hours.
  • Reels: short vertical videos ranked mainly by recommendation.
  • Explore: a discovery grid based on each user’s interests.
  • Direct: private and group messaging.

History of Instagram: key dates

Instagram started as a simple iPhone photo app and became one of Meta’s three apps with 3 billion users. The table lists the milestones.

Instagram users in numbers

Instagram’s ads reach more than one in five people on Earth. DataReportal’s January 2025 data shows an ad audience of 1.74 billion, equal to 21.3% of the world’s population, split 52.7% male and 47.3% female. The largest markets are India (414 million), the United States (172 million) and Brazil (141 million). In Poland, DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report counts 12.4 million people reachable with Instagram ads in late 2025, which is 39.5% of adults and 800 thousand more than a year earlier. Note that ad reach is not the same metric as monthly active users.

Instagram in marketing, SEO and AI search

Instagram matters to marketers because it combines paid reach, creator marketing and search visibility in one app. The sections below cover the three areas I see most often in client work.

Instagram ads

Instagram ads are bought in Meta Ads Manager together with Facebook placements. Formats include image, video and carousel ads in Feed, full-screen Stories and Reels ads, and placements in Explore. Retargeting audiences built with the Meta Pixel let you run remarketing to recent site visitors. I run these campaigns as part of Meta Ads services.

Instagram SEO and Google indexing

Since 10 July 2025, public photos, videos, carousels and Reels from professional accounts of users over 18 can appear in Google and Bing results. Instagram calls this setting “Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results”. Captions, alt text and the profile name now work like on-page signals, so a clear keyword in the first line of a caption helps both Instagram search and Google.

Instagram and AI search

Once posts are indexable, AI tools can read and cite them. Brands that publish clear, factual captions give these systems quotable material, which supports Generative Engine Optimization.

Pro tip: Switch your brand profile to a professional account, check that search engine visibility is on, and write the first caption line as a plain description with your main keyword. That line is what Google shows as the snippet, and it is also what AI assistants quote.
