What is Messenger?
Messenger is a free messaging service connected to Facebook accounts and available on Android, iOS and the web. Users send text, photos, videos, voice notes, stickers and files, make calls and create group chats. Businesses connect Messenger to their Facebook Page to answer customer questions, automate replies with a chatbot and run ads that open a conversation instead of a website.
History of Messenger
Messenger evolved from a chat box inside Facebook into a separate app with its own ecosystem.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| April 2008 | Facebook Chat rolls out inside facebook.com |
| 9 August 2011 | Standalone Messenger apps for iOS and Android |
| April 2014 | Messaging removed from the main Facebook app |
| April 2016 | Bot platform for businesses announced |
| July 2016 | 1 billion users |
| December 2023 | Default end-to-end encryption for personal chats starts rolling out |
| 15 December 2025 | Desktop apps for Windows and macOS shut down |
The user base grew from 600 million in April 2015 to 1.2 billion in April 2017. Since late 2025 desktop users chat through facebook.com or messenger.com, while the mobile apps keep working.
Key features of Messenger
Messenger’s features split into 3 groups: private communication, privacy controls and business tools.
Chats and calls
Messenger supports one-to-one and group chats, voice and video calls and media sharing. According to Meta’s December 2023 announcement, people share over 1.3 billion photos and videos on Messenger every day.
Encryption and privacy
Personal chats and calls use end-to-end encryption by default since the rollout that began in December 2023. Meta added message editing for 15 minutes, disappearing messages and a Secure Storage PIN for restoring history.
Business messaging
Business messaging connects Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts and ads to one inbox in Meta Business Suite. Since 2021 users can also message between Messenger and Instagram.
Messenger in marketing
Messenger works in marketing as a conversational channel for sales, support and lead generation. The most common uses are:
- Click-to-Messenger ads that start a chat instead of sending traffic to a landing page.
- Automated replies that answer FAQs and collect contact details from a lead.
- Customer service with order updates and complaint handling.
- Re-engagement of people who already wrote to your Page, within Meta’s messaging policy windows.
Measure Messenger campaigns by cost per conversation and by conversion after the chat, not by clicks. In Poland the reach is large: Mediapanel recorded an average of over 7 hours a month per Messenger user in November 2024, more than twice the time spent on WhatsApp.
Messenger and SEO or AI search
Messenger has no direct effect on Google rankings, because private conversations are not indexed. Its value for search is indirect. Chat logs show the exact questions customers ask before buying, and those questions are the best input for FAQ sections, product pages and content that AI assistants like to cite. I recommend exporting them quarterly and mapping them to pages as part of an SEO strategy.
Messenger vs WhatsApp in Poland
Messenger leads WhatsApp in Poland on reach and time spent, according to Mediapanel data for November 2024.
| Metric | Messenger | |
|---|---|---|
| Real users | 20.96 million | 17.56 million |
| Reach among internet users | 70.6% | 59.1% |
| Average time per month | 7 h 18 min | 3 h 20 min |
In many Western European markets WhatsApp dominates instead, which matters when you plan customer messaging across countries. Other Meta and social channels such as Instagram Reels or TikTok serve discovery, while Messenger serves the conversation that follows.
