What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search where a Gemini model plans the search, reads the web and writes one synthesised answer. Unlike AI Overviews, which add a short summary above classic results, AI Mode replaces the list of ten blue links with a chat-style answer that keeps the context of the conversation. Users open it from the “AI Mode” tab in results, from google.com/ai or from a button in the Google app on Android and iOS. Input is multimodal: text, voice, a photo or a live camera view.
How does Google AI Mode work?
AI Mode works by splitting one question into many sub-queries, running them in parallel and merging the results into a single cited answer. Google calls this technique query fan-out and described it in the March 2025 launch post on the Google blog. The process has four stages:
- Interpret the question and its intent, including earlier turns of the conversation.
- Generate related sub-queries across subtopics and data sources (web index, Shopping Graph, Knowledge Graph, maps).
- Retrieve and rank passages from the pages that answer each sub-query.
- Write the answer with Gemini and attach links to the pages it used.
Deep Search, announced at Google I/O on 20 May 2025, pushes the same idea further: according to TechCrunch, it runs dozens or even hundreds of searches and returns a fully cited report after a few minutes.

Key features of Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode combines four feature groups that matter for marketers: deeper research, shopping, agentic actions and personal context.
Deep Search
Deep Search produces a long, source-heavy report for research and comparison queries. Since July 2025 Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also switch the model to Gemini 2.5 Pro, as reported by 9to5Google.
Shopping and agentic tasks
The shopping features use Google’s Shopping Graph to compare products, track prices and show virtual try-on. Agentic features built on Project Mariner check availability for tickets, restaurants and local services.
Personal context and Search Live
Personal context lets AI Mode use past searches and connected apps such as Gmail to tailor the answer. Search Live adds a real-time voice and camera conversation.
Google AI Mode in SEO and marketing
Google AI Mode changes SEO because visibility now depends on being cited inside the answer, not only on ranking for the head query. Fan-out means your page competes for dozens of hidden sub-queries, so a narrow page that answers one question clearly can be cited even if it does not rank in the top 10 for the main keyword. Google also reports that questions typed into AI Mode are nearly three times longer than classic searches, which favours content that covers specific use cases, comparisons and constraints.
In my SEO projects I treat AI Mode as part of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): clear entities, answer-first paragraphs, structured data and strong brand mentions across the web. Crawlability still matters, because AI Mode retrieves from Google’s index. For brands selling abroad this is also an international SEO task, since the same question in German, Czech or Polish triggers different sub-queries and different sources. My AI SEO (GEO) services start from mapping these fan-out queries per market.
Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews
Google AI Mode differs from AI Overviews in depth, interface and click behaviour.
| Feature | AI Mode | AI Overviews |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Separate tab, full answer page | Box above classic results |
| Conversation | Follow-up questions keep context | One-off summary |
| Research depth | Fan-out plus Deep Search | Shorter fan-out |
| Classic links | Mostly hidden | Visible below the box |
AI Overviews reach a larger audience: Google reported over 1.5 billion monthly users in May 2025. Other conversational engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity AI follow a similar retrieve-then-write pattern.
