What is Threads? Definition, history and how it works

Threads is a text-based social media app from Meta, built by the Instagram team, where users publish short public posts and join conversations. It launched on 5 July 2023 and, according to Meta’s June 2026 announcement, reached 500 million monthly active users. For marketers, Threads is the main alternative to X for real-time public conversation, and since January 2026 it shows ads to users worldwide.

How does Threads work?

Threads works as a public microblogging feed tied to your Instagram identity. You sign in with an Instagram account, and your username and verification badge carry over. Posts can contain up to 500 characters of text, plus links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes long. The feed mixes accounts you follow with recommended posts, and since February 2026 a feature called “Dear Algo” lets users steer what the algorithm shows them.

Threads also connects to the fediverse, the network of servers that use the W3C ActivityPub protocol. Meta lists three steps:

  • March 2024: a fediverse sharing beta opens for adult users with public profiles.
  • June 2024: users can see and like replies from Mastodon and other servers inside Threads.
  • June 2024: the beta expands to more than 100 countries.

History of Threads: key dates

Threads grew from a record-breaking launch to a 500-million-user platform in three years. The table lists the milestones.

DateEvent
5 July 2023Threads launches in more than 100 countries, not in the EU
July 2023100 million sign-ups within five days
14 December 2023Threads launches in the European Union, including Poland

August 2025400 million monthly active users
21 January 2026Meta announces ads for all Threads users worldwide
June 2026500 million monthly active users

The EU launch came later because of the region’s digital rules, including the Digital Markets Act. After the initial hype, analytics firms reported that Threads lost about 80% of its daily users within weeks, so the later recovery was built on recommendations and Instagram cross-promotion.

Threads vs X

Threads now beats X on mobile daily users but still trails it on desktop. Data cited by Chip.pl in January 2026 shows about 143.2 million daily mobile users for Threads against 126.2 million for X (Twitter), after Threads first passed X on mobile in September 2025. On the web, X gets about 150 million daily visits, compared with about 9 million for Threads.

Threads in marketing and SEO

Threads matters to marketers because it gives brands a text channel with Instagram’s audience behind it. Three uses work well in practice.

Threads ads

Threads ads are created in Meta Ads Manager as an extra placement next to Instagram and Facebook. Image, video and carousel ads are supported, including the 4:5 format. Because buying runs through the same system, I usually test Threads as an added placement inside existing Meta Ads campaigns before building separate creative.

Organic reach and community

Text posts, replies and short opinions fit Threads best. Brands with a strong Instagram audience can start with followers who already know them, which makes Threads cheaper to grow than a new X account.

Search and AI visibility

Public Threads posts are open web pages, so they can be crawled and quoted. A clear expert post that answers a common question can be picked up by AI assistants, which supports Generative Engine Optimization alongside your website content.

Pro tip: Repurpose your best-performing blog definitions into short Threads posts that answer one question in the first sentence. You reuse proven content, reach your Instagram audience in text form and create another citable source for AI search.
