What is buzz marketing? Definition, examples and how it works

Buzz marketing is a promotion strategy that creates conversation about a brand so that consumers spread the message to each other, in person and online. It relies on word of mouth, which 89% of respondents trusted most in Nielsen’s 2021 Trust in Advertising study for Canada, far ahead of influencer ads at 23%. A single successful buzz campaign can reach millions of people with a small media budget.

What is buzz marketing?

Buzz marketing is a form of word-of-mouth marketing in which a brand designs a story, stunt or experience worth talking about and lets people carry it further. The brand starts the conversation; customers, media and creators amplify it. The term was popularised by Mark Hughes in his 2005 book “Buzzmarketing: Get People to Talk about Your Stuff”, published by Portfolio. Hughes was the marketer behind Half.com’s stunt that persuaded the town of Halfway, Oregon, to rename itself Half.com for a year.

How does buzz marketing work?

Buzz marketing works in five stages, from a talk-worthy idea to measurable reach.

  1. Create a hook: something surprising, useful, funny or emotional.
  2. Seed it with early adopters, communities or creators who care about the topic.
  3. Make sharing easy with a hashtag, challenge, short video or referral reward.
  4. Amplify the best reactions with PR and paid media.
  5. Measure mentions, branded search volume and sales.

Examples of buzz marketing

The best-known buzz campaigns turned a simple action into something people wanted to repeat.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge2014$115 million raised in 8 weeks for the ALS Association

According to the ALS Association, about $77 million of the Ice Bucket Challenge money went to research. The campaign shows the core mechanism: a short video, a public nomination of friends and a cause people were proud to share. Today the same pattern drives most viral trends on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Types of buzz marketing

Buzz marketing uses four main formats, often combined in one campaign.

  • Stunts and guerrilla actions in public space.
  • Challenges and user-generated content on social media.
  • Referral and ambassador programmes.
  • Influencer seeding with clearly disclosed partnerships.

Buzz marketing in SEO and AI search

Buzz marketing matters for search because conversation creates branded searches, links and mentions that search engines and AI models treat as signals of popularity. When a campaign takes off, news sites link to the brand, which builds backlinks without outreach. In my SEO strategy work I plan a landing page before launch, so people who search for the campaign name land on the brand’s own site and not on a news article. Mentions on forums, Reddit and media also feed the sources that ChatGPT and Google AI Mode cite.

Buzz marketing vs stealth marketing

Buzz marketing is open about the brand behind it, while stealth marketing hides the commercial intent. Hidden paid promotion counts as an unfair commercial practice in EU consumer law (in Poland it is called kryptoreklama), so every paid post or seeded opinion must be labelled.

Pro tip: Register the campaign hashtag and name as a page on your site a week before launch, then add press coverage links to it as they appear; that page usually ranks first for the campaign name.

Frequently asked questions about Buzz marketing

What is buzz marketing?

Buzz marketing is a strategy that creates excitement around a brand so people talk about it and spread the message themselves. It relies on word of mouth, social sharing and media coverage.

What is an example of buzz marketing?

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 is a classic example, raising $115 million in eight weeks. Another is Half.com persuading Halfway, Oregon, to rename itself after the brand.

Is buzz marketing the same as viral marketing?

Buzz marketing is the strategy of starting conversation, while virality is one possible outcome when content spreads very fast. Not every buzz campaign goes viral.

Is buzz marketing legal?

Buzz marketing is legal when the brand behind it is disclosed. Hiding paid promotion, for example by posting fake customer opinions, breaches consumer protection law in the EU.
