SEO is not one discipline but a set of them, and knowing which type your business actually needs is the difference between a campaign that pays for itself and one that spreads a budget across work nobody required. The stakes per position are steep: Backlinko’s research puts the gain from moving up a single spot at about 2.8% more clicks, and moving from second to first at up to 74.5%. I am Adrian Dąbrowiecki, and in seven years running campaigns for SaaS and ecommerce brands I have never once needed all fourteen types on the same account. This is what each one is, and how to work out which two or three matter for you.
What Are the 14 Types of SEO?
There are 14 types of SEO in common use: 4 core types, 7 specializations and 3 emerging approaches.
The four core types are on-page, off-page, technical and local SEO. The seven specializations, ecommerce, news, mobile, international, image, video and voice, overlap with the core types but demand their own tactics and expertise. The three emerging approaches are programmatic SEO, AI SEO and SXO.
| Type | Category | What it focuses on |
|---|---|---|
| On-page SEO | Core | Content, metadata, structure and internal links on your own pages |
| Off-page SEO | Core | Backlinks, brand mentions and external authority signals |
| Technical SEO | Core | Crawlability, indexation, speed, structured data |
| Local SEO | Core | Map results, business profile, location queries |
| Ecommerce SEO | Specialized | Product and category pages, transactional queries |
| News SEO | Specialized | Fast indexing, Google News and Discover visibility |
| Mobile SEO | Specialized | Mobile performance and usability under mobile-first indexing |
| International SEO | Specialized | Hreflang, domain structure, localized content per market |
| Image SEO | Specialized | Alt text, file naming, compression, visual search |
| Video SEO | Specialized | Transcripts, thumbnails, video schema, YouTube ranking |
| Voice SEO | Specialized | Spoken, conversational, question-shaped queries |
| Programmatic SEO | Emerging | Pages generated at scale from templates and data |
| AI SEO | Emerging | Visibility inside AI answers, entity and semantic coverage |
| SXO | Emerging | Ranking and conversion treated as one problem |
Two notes on this list before we go deeper. Voice SEO has quietly merged into something larger: the conversational query patterns it addressed are now what people type into assistants, so the work sits closer to AI SEO than to a separate discipline. And AI SEO has changed meaning entirely since this list was first written. It used to mean using AI tools to produce content faster. It now mostly means being visible inside AI-generated answers, which is a different job with different tactics.
The 4 Core SEO Types
The four core SEO types are on-page, off-page, technical and local SEO, and together they cover what is on your pages, what other sites say about you, how your site is built, and where you appear geographically.
1. On-page SEO
On-page SEO optimizes individual pages to rank better: keyword research and placement, metadata, content structure, internal linking, schema and mobile responsiveness.
It is where I start on every account, for a practical reason rather than a philosophical one. On-page work is the only part of SEO you can execute this week without anyone else’s cooperation, and the results show up in weeks rather than months. Clean code, a logical heading hierarchy and titles that match intent do most of the work here.
2. Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO builds authority through signals outside your domain: backlinks, brand mentions, digital PR, guest publishing, community presence and citations.
Links remain the strongest external signal, but the field has broadened. Being discussed, cited and reviewed across the web now feeds both traditional rankings and how AI systems describe your brand when asked to recommend something. Off-page results are slower to appear and considerably more durable once they do.
3. Technical SEO
Technical SEO makes the site accessible and comprehensible to crawlers: sitemaps, crawl budget, page speed, structured data, HTTPS, canonical logic and mobile performance.
The scale of the opportunity here is larger than most teams assume. Ahrefs data suggests only around a third of sites meet Google’s Core Web Vitals thresholds, which means performance alone separates a site from two thirds of its competitors. Technical work rarely creates growth by itself; it removes the ceiling on everything else.
4. Local SEO
Local SEO improves visibility for geographically specific queries through Google Business Profile, citations, NAP consistency, reviews and location pages.
It is also the most commonly neglected type. ReviewTrackers found that 58% of businesses do not optimize for local search at all, while Google’s data shows around 28% of “near me” searches lead to a purchase. Few areas of marketing offer that combination of high intent and low competition.
The 7 Specialized SEO Types
The seven specializations are ecommerce, news, mobile, international, image, video and voice SEO, each shaped by a specific business model or content format.
Ecommerce SEO
Product and category pages, structured data, faceted navigation and site architecture built for transactional queries. The defining problems are scale and duplication: thousands of near-identical URLs and manufacturer descriptions everyone else is also using.
News SEO
Speed of indexing, headline markup, author profiles and eligibility for Google News and Discover. A discipline of hours rather than months, and one where publishing infrastructure matters more than content depth.
Mobile SEO
Responsive layout, mobile usability and performance under mobile-first indexing. With roughly 60% of global web traffic arriving on phones, this stopped being a specialization and became a baseline, though plenty of sites still fail it.
International SEO
Hreflang, domain and URL structure, geotargeting and content localized rather than translated, so search engines serve the right version to the right market. This is the specialization my agency is built around, and the one companies typically address a year later than they should. More in our guide to international SEO.
Image SEO
Descriptive file names, alt attributes, compression and correct sizing. It serves accessibility, page speed and image search simultaneously, which makes it unusually good value for the effort involved.
Video SEO
Transcripts, thumbnails, chapters and video schema, targeting both YouTube and video results in Google. Worth real investment if video is already part of your marketing, and not worth starting solely for SEO reasons.
Voice SEO
Conversational, question-shaped, long-tail queries answered directly and concisely. The tactics that served voice search now largely serve AI assistants, which is where this specialization has effectively migrated.
The 3 Emerging SEO Approaches
The three emerging approaches are programmatic SEO, AI SEO and SXO.
Programmatic SEO
Generating large numbers of pages from templates and a dataset to capture long-tail queries at scale, which works well for listings, directories, comparisons and location or category permutations.
It also fails loudly when the template outweighs the substance. Google’s scaled content policies now name this directly, so the test is whether each page would be worth publishing if search engines did not exist. Real data variation passes. Find-and-replace does not.
AI SEO
The meaning of this one has shifted. It used to describe using AI tools to write and analyze faster. It now primarily means earning citations inside AI Overviews, AI Mode and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Those are separate channels with separate rules, and they do not track traditional rankings. On Landingi we ended up cited two to six times more often than a competitor with roughly three times our organic traffic, which only makes sense if you accept they are measured differently. What produced it was content structured for information retrieval: direct answers, checkable claims, clean hierarchy, named authors tied to their expertise.
SXO
Search experience optimization treats ranking and conversion as one problem. Ranking first is worth nothing if people return to the results page five seconds later, and that behaviour eventually costs the position too.
The 4 SEO Categories by Ethical Approach
SEO methods also divide by ethics into white hat, black hat, grey hat and negative SEO, and the distinction determines how long your results survive.
White hat SEO
Practices that comply with search engine guidelines: genuinely useful content, earned links, technical quality, real user value. Slower, and the only version where results still belong to you in three years.
Black hat SEO
Manipulative techniques that violate guidelines: keyword stuffing, cloaking, hidden text, bought links, doorway pages. Fast, detectable, and increasingly detected by automated systems rather than periodic updates. Rational only when the domain is disposable.
Grey hat SEO
Tactics not explicitly forbidden but pushing the boundary: link exchanges, lightly rewritten content at scale, expired domains bought for authority. The bet is that guidelines will not tighten, and over the last decade that bet has consistently lost. Expired domain abuse was grey until Google named it in the spam policies.
Negative SEO
Attacks aimed at damaging a competitor: spam links pointed at their domain, content scraping, fake reviews, hacking.
“Negative SEO is unethical and often illegal” Landingi, 14 Different SEO Types in Digital Marketing
Worth understanding defensively rather than offensively. Monitor your backlink profile so you notice an unexplained wave of low-quality links early, and treat a sudden ranking drop with no algorithm update behind it as a reason to check.
The 6 Types of SEO Services
SEO services divide into foundational, on-page, off-page, specialized, local and audit services, and knowing which you are buying prevents most disappointing engagements.
Foundational SEO services
The groundwork that makes a site indexable and crawlable: technical audits, crawl error resolution, sitemaps, robots.txt, HTTPS, clean URLs, plus on-page essentials such as metadata, heading hierarchy and schema. Usually delivered at the start of a campaign or around a launch or redesign. Skip it and everything built on top underperforms.
On-page SEO services
Aligning pages with target queries: content, headings, metadata, internal linking, and resolving duplicate content and cannibalization. The fastest-moving service, and the one where results are easiest to attribute.
Off-page SEO services
Link acquisition, digital PR, brand mentions, citations and outreach. Ask two questions before signing: how are the links acquired, and who owns the assets they are built on.
Specialized SEO services
Work tied to a business model or format: ecommerce, international, video, news. These need different tooling and different experience, and a generalist agency taking on an international migration usually discovers that halfway through.
Local SEO services
Google Business Profile optimization, citation building, NAP consistency, review generation and location pages. Narrow scope, and frequently the highest return available to a business with a physical catchment area.
SEO audit services
A diagnostic rather than an implementation: architecture, crawlability, indexation, internal linking, mobile performance, metadata, backlinks and competitive position, ending in a prioritized list of what is costing you the most.
What Is the Best Type of SEO?
The best type of SEO is whichever two or three match your business model, executed properly, rather than all fourteen executed thinly.
A local service business needs local SEO and enough on-page work to support it, and gains almost nothing from video or programmatic. An online store needs ecommerce, technical and, once domestic terms are working, international. A SaaS company needs on-page, off-page and international earlier than it expects, because software has no shipping radius.
The one universal is technical SEO, because it is a precondition rather than a strategy. Beyond that, the honest answer to “which type is best” is a question in return: where does your revenue come from, and what would have to be true for search to bring more of it.
| Business type | Types that matter | Usually not worth it |
|---|---|---|
| Local service business | Local, on-page, technical | Programmatic, video, international |
| Online store | Ecommerce, technical, image, international | News, voice |
| SaaS / B2B | On-page, off-page, international, AI | Local, image |
| Publisher | News, technical, on-page | Ecommerce, local |
| Marketplace or directory | Programmatic, technical, on-page | Voice, video |
Why Do SEO Types Matter When Planning a Strategy?
SEO types matter because each addresses a different way people find you, and choosing the wrong ones wastes a budget without producing a visible failure anyone can point at.
This is the quiet version of a failed campaign. Nothing breaks. Work happens every month, reports arrive, and revenue does not move, because the effort went into a type of SEO the business never needed. I have taken over accounts running video SEO for a B2B software company and local SEO for a business selling nationally online.
The sequence I use is simple. Start with technical, because it constrains everything else. Add the type your business model demands, ecommerce for a store, international for anyone selling across borders. Layer on-page work across whatever exists. Then, once those are producing, invest in off-page authority, which takes longest and compounds most.
Get International SEO Services From Marketer Coffee
Of the fourteen types above, international SEO is the one companies most often postpone and most often regret postponing, because the decisions it involves, domain structure, hreflang, content architecture, are expensive to reverse once a site has grown around them. That is what we do at Marketer Coffee, a Poland-based international SEO agency working with SaaS and ecommerce brands across the US, UK and Europe, at rates 40 to 60% below comparable US and UK agencies. Every engagement opens with a free preliminary audit and a 90-day plan that names which types of SEO your business actually needs and in what order.
See the scope and pricing in international SEO services, or go straight to your market: United States, United Kingdom, Germany. If you would rather see the mix proven first, the Landingi case study covers 375% organic growth across 29 months and eight language versions, and the Aldi case study covers 132% growth on the retail side.
